Lens won't autofocus
Check that the electrical contacts on the lens and camera body are clean, and that the lens is mounted fully and correctly to the camera, i.e. no damage or dirt in the mounts. If these are all okay, it is looking like an internal problem with the lens's focus motor, or possibly something jammed in the lens.
If possible, try the lens on another camera body. Alternatively, you could switch the camera to a manual focus mode (or a mode that
doesn't require focus confirmation) and see if you can take a picture.
This pretty much rules out what you can do for yourself I'm afraid. If you still have no luck, you will probably need to take it to a camera store for inspection / repair.
(Incidentally, the R09 is not actually an error message. It means that
you have 9 shot capacity in the
camera buffer before it will fill up. It sounds as if the camera is set
to an auto-focus mode that requires focus confirmation before the
shutter will fire which is why you're seeing the message.)
Matt.
