Black screen on start up

I just purchased refurbished optiplex. the machine will start - the fans run and the light in the power button turns a steady green. The lights on the back of the unit light up A- green B- amber C- green D- green and the light on the mother board is steady amber. The light on the monitor will go from amber to green momentarily, the screen stays black. Any Ideas?

I am having the same problem EXACTLY as Owen. It happened after a thunderstorm. I have two GX270's that are identical (both are from the same build and both were connected to the same power strip. One was affected, the other was not. I performed all the suggested steps with no success, Then I swapped the video cards, battery and ram modules. All the parts work on my good computer but none of the parts make differrence on the other computer-- it still does not work. I understand that the mother board on some of the GX270's have bad capacitors (which can be detected by Xs), but such is not the case on either of mine.Where can I get access to the code list for the ABCD lights? I have googled for 1/2 of a day with no success,,,

Yes you are apsolutely right, i was also having same problem, i.e amber power indication & blank screen, i googled it lot & finally found solution here. Thanks to DARKLORD1. I have followed the following steps to resolve this issue.
1> shutdown the system
2> remove the power cord, cmos battery and RAM
3> waited for more than 5 mins
4> then attched the power cord only
5> switched on the power button continuously 5 times
6> Then amber indication on power goes off & green indication came & system is booted with beep sound.
7> Then I shotdowned the system reattached cmos battery & reseated RAM.
8> system is booted properly.

Thanks for the solution

On using my computer, it works perfectly but after a very long time, it brings a black blank sreen. what could be the cause of this. it is an DELL optiplex 360

hi there,

several causes can be check, power supply you can check your avr and psu,if you have the power by checking the blower fan of psu and thd fan of processor and indicator led light of your cpu you have the power, you can check your video card by replacing another video card of your pc if still black screen, you can check memory card,if you have multiple video card
pull out one,run again your pc,if still black screen replace by one you pull out try it also.means isolate of checking the device of your computer, you can determine which device is faulty, besure to shut off your pc every time you check the devices, also you can run your pc w/o your hardisk and cd room.replace defective devices so your windows will put back, regards

Fan makes a lound noise and power button is orange

It sounds as if your power supply is cooked because the cooling fan has been running slow

Only way you can check is to take a panel off and hook a voltmeter into the 12v & 5V supplies on the Hard Drive and the Floppy Drive.

Blown dell motherboard

Have you checked to make sure it wasn't the power supply? If this motherboard is still inside the pc and the cd/dvd lights up, or the network card shows life, fans, case lights, etc: than I would rule bad mobo. If nothing shows signs of life, try power supply or even better maybe a lose connection.Check all cabling and wire plugs. Clean out any dust.

I have a dell optiplex gx620 that won't turn on?!

Dell Optiplex GX620 has a failure power supply. A some of the capacitors inside it are poor quality :( .In this case is an emergency procedure to start power supply (ie. for backup) : make a temporary shortcut between green and black wire in main mo-bo connector (24 wires) , and use normal Power On button. When main fan starts remove temporary shortcut.
