For no apparent reason, the latch broke on the 9187 ST. Take the door off of the microwave, which isn't too hard. Rotate the door to 90 degrees, lift up, and slide it to the left. Place the door on the counter, latch side up. Use a thin knife or screwdriver to lift the panel that covers the latch. It is very easy to remove it from the door. Then slide the latch up and lift is out. The spring is under the latch. The clip on the latch that held the spring was fractured. So, I drilled a tiny hole in the body piece from where the clip extended. I reattached the spring to the latch, replaced the panel, replaced the door, and it is as good as new.
This is because of the broken latch. There are switches inside the oven that are operated by the door latches to make sure you're not trying to use the oven with the door open. With the new door, your oven should be back to normal.
To replace the inner part of the latch is actually quite easy. Remove the glass tray from inside, then unplug the unit. Take to a flat surface and stand on edge so that the door will open flat. On the inside is a plastic trim that is just clipped on. Pop this off carefully and you will now see the assembly you need to replace. Note where the spring is anchored to the door before taking it apart. Put a small amount of lubricant on the guide pins of the new catch (petroleum jelly works great).
I have a semmins microwave working in great condition, last night the latch mechanism inside the microwave don't allow the door latch to close.Only the top portion, bottom portion is ok.
The latch head (with hooklike projections) have a spring to keep it pulled down.
If the latch head can be easily pushed up and falls back freely, then the monting tab on the back of the latch head is broken and it will have to be glued or replaced. The new part is better.
To get to the door screws inside, you have to remove the choke cover, as shown in the photo.
