Generator runs, but produces no power

Powermate 2500 portable generator. The gas engine runs fine but produces no power at all to the breaker. We did trip the breaker several times while running multiple saws. The breaker ohm's out good, just no power to the breaker.

Thanks

If it's still under warranty take it back to the retailer and tell them it quit working - don't offer any other information.

If you must fix the E/G yourself - On the generator there's a cover on the back; take the cover off so that the back of the windings are exposed. You should see 4 to 6 diodes mounted to the rotor and stator...those diodes are most likely burned out because of temperature failure, due to overload. You have to take them out to isolate them...they should read .6 Ohms one way; reverse the leads and they slhould read about 1.2 Ohms. If there shorted you'll read 0 Ohms and open infinety.

Anyway, replace those diodes and you should re-establish your field winding voltage which develops you A/C output.

Good Luck,
Mike...

You might have to ''Flash the Field''. When your generator is sitting for a while doing nothing, the residual magnetism it needs to build up power might be gone, I've seen this two times, no needs to change parts. When you remoove the cover at the end of the rotor, you should see two wires, one negative and one positive, disconnect those and connect them on a 9volts battery, using aligator clip or whatever you got, start the generator for 1 minute, if you have a voltmeter on the gene you should be able to see the voltage rising. Hook it back the way it use to be, and give it a try.

When your generator sits, it retains a residual magetized armature. When it runs that little bit of maentism will start the output, which in turn is the same that produces the excitor voltage making the armature magnet more powerful and is regulated. If you were to accidentally apply AC to the alternator when it's not running, that will "erase" the residual magentic field in the armature, and it will never start the output. Now here is a trick that I use. Get a 12 volt battery, and some cables, with the generator off mark the position of where the shaft is by looking anywhere you can see it, maybe at where the starter rope is. Now apply the battery to the output of the generator just for a second or two. The shaft may turn, that's OK. Now try the generator, if it still doesn't work, you magentized it backwards, so with it off again, rotate the shaft 180 degrees from where you had it the first try, and then apply the battery to the output again with the exact polarity you did the first time for 2 second. Now try the generator, it should work.

My generator runs fine but quit producing pwer. all cords are fine and tight, breakers are not fliped.

Hi Kenneth,You might need to flash your generator, I recommend the drill method. Here is the link to an article on how to do it. This is a very educational read and the process shouldn't take you longer than 5 minutes, I hope it works for you. Here is the link http://www.endtimesreport.com/dead_gen.html Good luck, Michael Burke

Your problem is with the electrical section of your product. Is it possible that your circuit breaker is flipping and cutting off the power? Have you tried plugging in to both of your outlets? Do both exhibit the same problem? All or nothing on all power outputs?
If it's not circuit breaker related, it means your Alternator or power inverter is at fault and that's shop time!

Powermate PM0435002 engine runs but no electric power

you must check a few things since your question is general:
1- brushes are on the armature-holder, checkem ,,look for shattered parts or no continuity...if there is then replace them.

2- check your breaker by using a continuity tester,

3- AVR located on the armature-hlder and actually screw-fitted into it, if you smell burns on it...or see burnt parts replace it.(some times it does not appear on it....so if you checked 1 and 2(above) then replace it).

Gererator stops producing power

This sounds like a "flying open" in the rotor. Over time a small part of the wire that winds around the rotor has gotten cracked just enough to open up when it's warm and being pulled on by the force of the rotor spinning. To test this further, take the wires off the brushes and connect an ohm meter across them then run the generator, if you see the ohm meter indicate an open circuit you've found the problem. This can be repaired but it means removing the rotor and finding the weak spot in the winding. You could replace the rotor for a couple of hundred dollars or get a new generator.

Carl

Coleman Powermate 5000 reset problem

Yes, there must be a protection device on the unit somewhere. It should be indicated in the owners manual. It may be on the box the outlets are in, or built into the cover of the generation unit.
