Hello,
Ink Cartridge Maintenance
Replacing an Ink Cartridge
The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading
position unless the printer is busy.
Aligning an Ink Cartridge
You may need to align the ink cartridge when characters are not properly
formed or are not aligned at the left margin, or when vertical or straight lines
appear wavy.
To align the ink cartridge:
In Windows 2000, click Start® Settings® Printers.
The Printing Preferences dialog box opens.
The page is scanned. When the scan is complete, the cartridge is
aligned. You may discard the alignment page when the alignment is complete.
Please download the manual from the link below and go to chapter Ink Cartridge Maintenance:

Hope it helped.

Well, first off ,it's dell's fault, not yours. Even Official Dell cartridges are temperamental at best. The cartridge error you are explaining is common with Dells. They even have what's called a marriage issue, meaning the cartridge will work in only one single printer. However, I'm not sure how to fix it. Sometimes, you can install a new one and the other cartridge you never touched gives you fits, and goofs up. I'd say get a new printer. Dell is increasingly getting more stingy with their ink, and truth be told, I don't think their quality (*lexmark makes dell, so stay away from them too) matches HP or canon. If you want the best cost per page, get a canon that has individual ink cartridges. They are easy to refill, and print a great picture. You pay more $$ up front, but you'll save a ton in the long run

Hi try these steps
STEP: Disconnect and Reconnect the Printer Power SupplyTop of Form 1
Bottom of Form 1
Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
Disconnect the power supply from the back of the printer.
Wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power supply to the back of the printer.
Plug the power cord back into the wall socket
STEP: Clean the Contacts and Wick the Ink Cartridge
Ensure the printer is powered on.
Lift the scanner unit.
Open the cartridge latches and remove the cartridges from the carrier
Take a clean, damp cloth and wipe the nozzle of the print cartridge from front to back.
Turn the cartridge so that you are looking at the contacts on the back side of the cartridge
Using a clean dry cloth, wipe the contacts so that no dust or other contaminants are visible
Clean the contact inside the printer with the dry cloth used to clean the cartridge contacts.
Replace the cartridges in the carrier and close the scanner unit.
STEP: Verify Each Cartridge Carrier Has an Ink Cartridge
Check to make sure the left cartridge carrier contains a black or photo ink cartridge.
Check to make sure the right carrier contains a color ink cartridge.
Remove each cartridge and examine it to make sure the protective tape has been removed from the contacts and the print head.
Replace each cartridge in the proper carrier.
Let me know the status.
Regards

Remove the cartridge and check to make sure you have removed the tape from the top and bottom of the cartridge. Reinsert the cartridge and make sure it snaps into place, close the lid, close the top of the printer (make sure it's closed completely.
Let me know if this solves the problem. If it does not let me know and we will go to the next step. Thanks.
