Sounds like you have Picture in Picture enabled. It doesn't show when viewing DVD because the DVD is the PIP. Just turn PIP off, there should be a button for it on the remote.
Thank you for the reply. I thought I was on the money considering your description but obviously not. I found the owners manual online.It seems that the area of the screen you describe is the same area that the on-screen display menu would be, and is a much larger area than PIP. Is the menu working correctly?
If there is an internal problem, you may want to use an external tuner through one of the AV inputs as a workaround in lieu of having it repaired. Since it isn't affecting the DVD player, it sounds like that might work. The manual mentions a service hotline, if you call maybe they can direct you to an authorized servicer , and give you some idea of cost if you want to have it repaired.

the PIP is turned off and it is still there. The PIP normally shows up on the other side of the screen. Thoughts?
