Sony Trinitron Wega kv-36fs120 wont turn on, standby/timer LED flashes 9 times.

My Sony Trinitron Wega kv-36fs120 wont turn on, standby/timer LED flashes 9 times. Occasionally the tv comes on but wont cycle on/off again. I've tried leaving it unplugged for over 24 hours, no difference. Any ideas?

same as ^ how do i fix it without taking the tv apart

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2008

Two weeks ago, when I woke up from sleep and realize that it was raining.

I asked my son to cut the TV off, because the wealther wasn't good; and he did. The next day, we went to put the TV on it couldn't come on but on stand bytimer. We've tried everything to have the TV come on but failed. It is currently off. How can I have the TV to work ?

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2008

The TV doesn't come on at all. IT only flash the red light indicating stand by timer.

I off the TV and put it on but the screen light doesn't even come on.

Secondly, I took off the plug and plug it again but failed to come on.

    Please help

  • mikecolleen Apr 17, 2008

While watching tv, it just turned itself off (as if someone just used the remote to turn off). Now whenever I manual or remote turn power button i just get the initial turn on sound and nothing except intermittent red led light/timer light. I need help. Tried unplugging it and tried slapping it.

I sent the tv out to be repaired because the set will not came on. The LED light flashes but the set will not turn on. Sony gave the name of a TV repair shop near my home. He said I need a power transformer but it is out of stock. So far I spent 70.00 on a set that is 2 years old and it still is not working. I will never buy a SONY again. STILL WAITING !!!!

Woke up this morning--turned TV on and got the blinking light that said stand by timer. What do I do?

    TV a Sony

  • Anonymous May 31, 2008

No freakin way!!! This just happened to my TV about an hour ago. My set is 2 years old as well. Just like the guy who posted previously I called Sony and they gave me the name of a local repairman. The good news is I haven't spent the $70 on the repairman's service call yet. I guess I'm gonna have to buy another TV, but it won't be a Sony, that's for sure!!! Oh, and I'm gonna be sure to turn my next set on and off in the store to ensure it doesn't make that big BONK!!! sound when it comes on!!!

  • Anonymous Jun 09, 2008

I am having the same problem. Mine is not turning on but it does give a slight noise that makes you think it will come on but then nothing. The Stand By light flashes repeatedly. I have also heard many big BONK noises throughout the TV's life (often when the power is off). Not sure if I am going to put the investment into a repair. My Wega is about 5 years old - always had a great picture. Still does - when I can get it to turn on.

I have the exact same problem. My tv cycles on and off. My tv is about 5 years old. Will someone post the solution and the cost when they find one?

  • chasthrpr Jul 17, 2008

Oh my goodness. Ours too. Flashng Standby light. It will not come on.

  • rdesutter Jul 20, 2008

ME too! Blinks 9 times. Sounds like planned obsolescence? I spoke with Sony just now and they said an authorized Sony dealer can tell me what the 9 blinks means. It signifies something specific is wrong with it... Maybe a fuse? Maybe it just needs to serviced and an arbitrary reset button inside is pushed?

  • Anonymous Dec 29, 2008

same problem, my sony tv kd-27FS170 won't turn, timer led is flashing, i had it only for 2 yrs. bad tv..i called sony and refer me to a technician

  • cp23 Jan 09, 2009

I have the kv36 and it is about 5 years old. I have had this problem about a year ago where it would flash the red light but the tube would not activate. I unplugged it from the wall for 5 or 10 minutes, and replugged it in and after another few minutes, the bang would happen and I see the light flash in the tube and shortly later turn on. It has in the past 2 days become more of an issue. It works perfectly and after even an hour of turning it off, it will not activate and I have to start the process over again. It keeps coming back on though after turning it on and off several times. I think the TV is terrific and have rarely had any issues with it, but this concerns me. I think keeping it clean is a good start, but I would like to find a reasonable solution that won't break the bank. This is a very expensive set and at the time was one of the best that Sony Offered at $2000 5 years ago was quite an investment. It is on 20 plus hours a day and has been used this way for most of it's life. I wouldn't right off Sony yet for those of you that are having this problem. We just need to find out if anyone has actually had a service call done on it and what it costs. That is what will help us the most, so if any one has had this fixed, please let us know how much you spent.

1. Place set on flat solid surface (garage floor or driveway).
2. Bang into it with SUV 3 or 4 times.
3. If set fails to respond, crush against garage wall or drive over it

My t.v. had the same wording on the screen. I fixed my by when power came on I hit number 5 you will see feature NTSC then you will see IDO then you hit 6 to make all 0s. Then you hit 1 you will see ID 1 hit 6 again and hit all 0's and so on keep doing that until ID 7. You can cut it on and off with the power button and the wording will be gone. If you loose power or unplug it you will have to do it all over again I have not figured out how to save it yet.

Replace standby D647 with a good 1N1007 1kv protected diode and most will then work OK, if not the other parts in the standby voltage has been damaged or just cold solder connections at fault.

By the way theres a solution to all your problem i recommend to do this by the technician re solder the circuit board or theres a problem in your power supply of the tv.

Try checking the soldered joints on the main circut board that attach the larger metal components...I re-soldered aprox 40 connections and now the tv works great!

SOURCE: Sony Trinitron Wega kv-36fs120 wont turn on, standby/timer LED flashes 9 times.

The relay is in the power supply area. I am sure that the fault is not the relay.

It is very common that there are various components starting to go off spec from age. Most of the failures are in the scan amplifiers and power supply areas.

It is also possible that the CRT emission is too low from age. What happens is that it is on the minimum edge and this explains why the set may turn on some of the time.

When the main uPC in the set sees any potential fault conditions it will go in to a protection mode to prevent damage and to be safe. Your set is probably borderline to operate.

Considering the age of your set, I would be shopping for a new TV set.

Sony Wega trinitron TV wont turn on..Keeps shutting off and standby flashes 7 times

Thank you for your question.

Fortunately this is a common symptom and there is a fix for it.

There are two power supply IC's and a capacitor that need to be change. In particular IC6501, IC8002, part number, Mcz3001db, and C6556, 33uF @ 160V.

Sony trinitron tv does not turn on

most of that problem is due to defective vertical ic,and your protect system detect that there is a part/s defective.
