I am assuming you have set your TV to the correct component in the TV's menu. If the hdmi is bad there are 2 options: 1) have it repaired and expect that this may cost almost as much as buying a new on on Black Friday or 2) set it up to run on s-video if so equipped. You won't get the best picture but it will be close.
Thanks for all the background, super detailed! I had a similar problem on a new Samsung that was really flaky with my HDMI from a raspberry pi. Would have to do all kinds of unplugging, cycling power etc like you're doing to get it to work. Once on it would work until I turned the tv off (actually doesn't turn off, but goes to sleep) and back on. Finally figured out that the resolution I was outputting wasn't supported, BUT sometimes it would work. Once I changed the resolution to a supported resolution it worked all the time.
What you're talking about is an AV cable, and yes some newer televisions no longer have AV ports. If you can not find 3 matching colored inputs on the sides or back of the TV, then you may need an adapter. In almost all cases, the television will have an HDMI port. I have attached some AV to HDMI adapters to this post. I hope you figure it out!
What kind of receiver? Do you have anything else like DVD player going thru receiver? My receiver has 3 hdmi in and 1 out (to tv) so all those equipment would just go to "hdmi" on tv.
Another way to do it is put your tv on exterior audio... for all sound to go thru your receiver.
Try another HDMI cable. I have seen them become defective. If it is not the cable, then try another HDMI device to test the TV.
Without an HDMI cable tester, and a way to measure the output of the HDMI source device the only way to resolve this is with the process of elimination.
