There is a good explanation at http://www.twowayradioforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=762

Your repeater channels, when activated will give you the most range. These 8 channels follow the basic 22 channels and have an R in front of the channel number. As the article at the link above says, you need a license and permission to use the repeater, if one is available in your area.

Motorola mj270r no range

Handheld radios talking line-of-sight with no obstacles will communicate approx. 2 miles. When talking from inside a building to outside, you can expect 1/4 to 1/2 miles range. Holding the antenna perpendicular to the ground gives you the best range. Height and placement of the antenna determines range. If you were on a mountain you could talk many miles into the valley below. However, in real world applications, range is limited. It can even be limited by the body fluid of the person wearing the radio on their hip, or blocked somewhat by the metal of the automobile one is riding in.

Channels 18-22 are listed as GMRS channels and may have more power than 1-17. The FRS channels are limited to 1/2 watt. But don't be fooled wattage doesn't equal distance. Higher wattage may give you a little more distance, but mostly it will give you clarity in the fringe areas.

Here is a link to the user guide: http://www.motorola.com/web/Business/Products/ConsumerTwo-WayRadios/Talkabout-MJ270R-Two-Way-Radio/_Documents/MJ270.pdf

A link to Motorola's page about the radio: http://www.motorola.com/Business/US-EN/Business+Product+and+Services/Two-Way+Radios+-+Consumers/MJ270R_Talkabout_Two-Way-Radio_B2B_US-EN

And I see where they are quoting 27 miles*, and go on to say:
*How far can I expect my radios to communicate? The communication range quoted is calculated under optimum conditions, with an unobstructed line of sight. Actual range will vary depending on terrain and conditions, and is often less than the maximum possible. Your actual range will be limited by several factors including, but not limited to, terrain, weather conditions, electromagnetic interference and obstructions.

Unfortunately, we are seldom in idea conditions. Radio-to-radio is going to get you 1/4 mile to 2 miles in real conditions.

Transmission cannot reach even 1/2 mile range in open field.do i have to use amplifier?

No. Your radios should be able to talk up to 2 miles line-of-sight. Some tips which will help you include
1) holding the radio upright with the antenna perpendicular to the ground. This will give you the best range. Tilting the radio to the side can reduce your range up to 2/3s.
2) Keeping the radio up higher on your body. Height and placement of the antenna determines range. A radio can talk as far as it can "see". Even the body fluid of the person wearing the radio consumes some of the range.
3) Face the direction of the person you are talking to. The less obstacles between you and the other user the better.
4) Have fully charged (rechargeable), or new (alkaline) batteries installed. One of the signs of a bad or poorly charged battery is loss of transmit power.

Usage range of motorola p1225ls

When using on a conventional channel radio-to-radio without the aid of a trunking system, your range should be up to 2 miles line-of-sight. Talking in and out of a building would reduce range to 1/4 to 1/2 mi. (This is with the user holding the radio upright (not tilted))

When or if using the P1225LS in conjunction with a trunking system you would have the range provided by the system, when you are within the footprint of their towers. Speak with your service provider to find out the expected range.

Which channels should I use in the Ozark mountain range? which privacy codes should I use? is there an online manual I can use? thank you!

Choose from channels 15-22 GMRS frequencies. Privacy code can be anything you desire. It simply keeps you from hearing other users on the same frequency.

All factory installed frequencies are between 462.000 - 468.000 MHz. They consist of FRS frequencies and some GMRS frequencies.

Here is a link to the User Guide (which does not seem to have a frequency chart) http://www.giantintl.com/ContentManage/manuals/Moto/T5320_T5410_T5420_User_Manual_E.pdf

MOTOROLA TALKABOUT T5400

First check your batteries. Try the battery pack from a known good radio. If you do not have a battery problem, your issue is probably non-reversible. Sorry. This style radio is non-repairable. The repairable Talkabout units include the Distance, Distance DPS, the TA-7400 and TA-7200.

Motorola FV500 - lots and lots of noise on line..

Hello hanshez,

It's also possible that the noise is being caused by local interence. You could try using a different channel. Disable your interference eliminator function and try listening to the various channels to find a quiet one. The interference codes don't actually eliminate interference they just keep you from hearing activity on the channel that can still interfere with your communications.

As long as there isn't other activity on the channel your radios should be able to communcate. Are the radios able to communicate with each other when you are in the same room? Does the problem occur when your son gets further away? Or when he is outside and you are inside? If so, the issue may be one of range.

These kinds of two-way radios are very good for communiations when the users are within line-of-sight of each other. However communications can become blocked by tall trees and buildings, if one user is inside a building or automobile, etc. The 8-mile range that Motorola lists is really only practical when one user has some altitude over the other and clear line-of-sight, such as being on top of a tall hill outdoors with no nearby buildings. For typical communications over relatively flat ground with no obstructions, I would expect a more typical range of less then one mile. Obstructions can lower this effective communications range even more.

Hope this helps.
