With the machine off, push upward on the inner drum and release. If the clunking sound occurs and the drum seems somewhat loose, likely the front main bearing for the drum is damaged and must be replaced. Major tear-down!

I have been having the same problem, Best buy sent a tech and they reported that it was the shaft. They also said that I abused the washer (which is not true, the tech concluded that only because my husband told him that we wash blankets; this washer is heavy duty and according to the Best buy sales person it was ok to wash blankets. misleading aha!); therefore the warranty did not cover that problem.
I got a second opinion and it was the tub bearing. The new Tech said that replacing the tub bearing is very complicated and sometimes people just don't want to deal with that, so they tell the warranty that it was abused so they don't have to deal with it.
I am very disapointed with BEST BUY because they do not want to take care of this issue, eventhoug their warranty covers wear and tear. The new Tech told me that it will cost about $500.00 to fix this problem.

When the washer spins it makes a banging noise and the plastic around the tub shaves off

Thank you! We took our Duet 9150 apart and found that ALL THREE support arms were cracked. Same problem with shredded front tub also. My washer is a little over 7 years old. I called Whirlpool at the above number (you can't get "warranty service" but the parts service lady transferred me to the warranty dept). They were most helpful, and are shipping me both the metal tub AND the plastic which the metal destroyed, free of charge. Apparently your experience has shown them they have a problem with this...or I got a more helpful service agent!

It appears your vibration damper has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question.
