With the machine off, push upward on the inner drum and release. If the clunking sound occurs and the drum seems somewhat loose, likely the front main bearing for the drum is damaged and must be replaced. Major tear-down!
I have been having the same problem, Best buy sent a tech and they reported that it was the shaft. They also said that I abused the washer (which is not true, the tech concluded that only because my husband told him that we wash blankets; this washer is heavy duty and according to the Best buy sales person it was ok to wash blankets. misleading aha!); therefore the warranty did not cover that problem.
I got a second opinion and it was the tub bearing. The new Tech said that replacing the tub bearing is very complicated and sometimes people just don't want to deal with that, so they tell the warranty that it was abused so they don't have to deal with it.
I am very disapointed with BEST BUY because they do not want to take care of this issue, eventhoug their warranty covers wear and tear. The new Tech told me that it will cost about $500.00 to fix this problem.
