No, cables RARELY go bad. More than likely it's the GPU on the motherboard. It's getting too hot.
You need to get some compressed air and blow out all the dust. It's best to do it outside ;)
Also give it about a minute or two before powering up again.
It also helps to use the PS3 in a vertical position, heat is your enemy!

Hey man i jsut got this problem today...the ironic part is i just fixed the yellow light of death on my little brother ps3 a couple hours before which is the process where u use the heat gun and everything , im gonna try and redo the heat sink tomarrow to see if it fixes the green screen. its to late to do another right now ill repost by tomarrows end hopefully if not deff by saturday ngith stay strong, i know ur missing mw2 lol so am i , it might be an easy cheap repair insted of 150 to sony
hey guys im back as promised, i fixed the green splotchs, it is indeed a malfunction in the heat sink to your main gpu and cpu. there is a video on youtube on how to fix it same as ylod video, cost 30 dollers worth of supplys and takes about 2-3 hours, i have an ebay service where i do ps3 repairs i can do it for 59.99 if you do not want to risk doing it yourself...but ya i fixed it...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...

Same problem I was having. It's not your cables. From the research that I was doing... Turns out, it's the connection between your heat-sink and the GPU/CPU. The best suggestion I could find was to send it in to Sony. Also, you can look into "re-flowing" it. I tried this method (minus putting a heat gun on my motherboard). Worked for a little bit, but still froze after about 20-30 minutes. After trying this 4 times, my system will no longer turn on.... Just send it in to Sony.......
