Low oil doesn't usually make engines cut out. Clean the air filter, change the plug and wire. If this doesn't help then I think you're looking at a carb. problem. Probably just clogged jets & ports. It's very common on small engine carbs. It shouldn't take more than 2 quarts of oil. Probably not even one.
I have proforce 2500 watt gen and it done the same thing. I thought it was the carb because it would run for about 45 seconds when I first started it and then start surging. I cleaned the carb checked the float and it did not help. I removed the gas tank and tilted it on end for about 5 minutes and reinstalled it. It works great now. I need to clean the trash out of the gas tank. You can also remove the gas shut off valve from the tank and check for trash.
I just bought a used coleman 2500 watt 5hp generator that starts using starting fluid but no gas getting to the engine, how o I go about cleaning the jets out?
take off carb, remove idle screw, the jet is a flat screw under that, remove and clean out holes, i used come copper trailer wire to fit in the tiny holes, cleaned up the idle nicely.
