If it is a clatter then a piston would be the cause, if it is like a hammer hitting metal then u have a bad connecting rod bearing or crankshaft main bearing

if it just happened as you drove over the gutter and it knocked could be a suspension part loose
By chance did you check your oil level. That would be ideal before your engine blows out. If that is fine, more in likely it maybe normal. Some GM vehicles do that also due to the cold weather. After sitting for a long period of time the oil will settle in the oil pan til you crank up. The knocking noise may last for 5-10 sec then it stops because the oil is lubricating the pistons again. But if it is constant and oil level is good, get a mechanic to check it out. Hope this helps.
Sounds like a lifter noise. worn lifters can't keep oil in them anymore so over night the oil leaks out. when you start the vehicle, you will hear a ticking noise or knocking noise till the lifters fill with oil again. only remedy is to replace the lifters.
you could try an additive but it's temporary.
