I have a top loading washer, 13 years old. I have never had a problem until now. The washer tub fills with water, then begins to aggitate then stops. The dial slowly goes around as though it is completing a cycle. However, nothing is happening. Sometimes the washer will begin to aggitate then stops after a few seconds. Then at the end of the cycle on the dial, it will spin and drain the wash water out, completely skipping the wash and rinse cycle. It leaves the clothes really damp as well. What is wrong?
Without knowing more details, and considering it's age , my guess is that you have a disconnection (or a loose wire) to the solenoids under the tub. these solenoids activate the clutch system that pulls it into agitate and spin modes. it might be the solenoids, but rarely do both go out at the same time. it might be the timer contacts or connections behind the control panel. or, it might be the timer its self.
try unplugging the unit and check all the connections.
hope this helps jay
