This is a fairly straightforward fix if you have basic mechanical skills. With this model of monitor the YSUS and ZSUS boards are a common problem. If one of them goes out the picture is gone, which is why your sound is still working. It is best to replace both boards as a pair but the problem is most likely the YSUS board. Just replace these boards and you should be in business again.

Sorry to say - it sounds like the 'pop of death' - If you got this from costco - give them a call and see if you can claim warranty (or the manufacturer).

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.

No video, Power light is on or blinking.
TV is making a clicking noise.
TV takes a while to come on
Screen is very dim or flickers.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

When they say the board I would think the power supply board ( unless they meen the whole screen itself)is the problem, In my experience the problem may not be that costly, If it went pop I assume the fault caused the fuse to go ( the one inside the tv), if so it could be a small component . It may be repairable for less, at least get a second opinion.
Unless the power supply needs a total rebuild or the screen itself it shouldn't cost that.

I have a 42" Maxent plasma TV about 7 years old.

Is it 7 years old? Marvelous. Exciting. the lifetime of Maxent televisions are 6 moths the most!!!

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.
