Dryer problem Dryer struggles to start. Sounds like the starter motor can't get the big drum to start turning... kind of a loud hum at first and the motor either begins to turn or just hums. I did replace the drum belt this morning but that did not correct the problem.

Exact problem here. After reading the Ohm Value on the start windings of the motor I read open. These windings should never have failed this soon. GE wants $205.00 plus shipping for a new one. Very disappointed in the unit as it is less than two years old. GE sucks.

You need to either clean or replace the drive motor motors have two windings start and run windings both windings kick in on start up then the centrifugal switch kicks the start windings out and the run windings take over if nothing is jamming the tub go to the motor sme times getting the lint out of the switches and motor will fix it if not replace it

Dryer makes loud humming noise but drum doesn't turn when I push start.

Check to see if the drum will turn by hand. If so, leave the door open but push the light switch button down and start the unit. Once you hear the humming sound, manually turn the drum with your hand to start. If the drum turns normally, you have a bad motor and needs to be replaced. If the drum does not turn, something is jamming the motor and needs to be disassembled and inspected.

Drum will turn empty but will not turn with heavy wet clothes in dryer. Is it a bad motor?

no, most likely, especially if it sounds right, it is a bad belt. The reason why i say if it sounds right is because the machine don't know the difference. if it was the motor you would hear a really loud hum before it stopped and then maybe it would start back up and hum some more. if your clothes are really heavy like dripping on your feet heavy. then you have a problem with your washer. Probably a transmission.

Press the start button on dryer, it hums but wont turn. With 2 people pressed the start button again, held the door switch, reached in turned the drum, it hummed stopped humming then no more nothing....

Sounds like a weak motor. You'll have to get a new motor installed. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to install yourself on that type of machine if you are handy. Motor is located in the bottom right of the machine, attached to the drum belt through a small pulley underneath the drum next to the motor.

BACK OF DYYER HOT BUT NOT INSIDE DRUM

That sounds like the motor is not turning (which drives the blower). Push on the door switch and watch the drum for turning while starting. Is there any loud humming? It might be the motor trying to run. If the motor turns easily by hand (power off), check the motor to see if it has a capacitor attached to it. If the capacitor fails, the motor won't start.

The Maytag Neptune dryer motor hums but does not start the drum turning. The belt is good.

The motor bearings or drum bearings may be seized or the motor starter circuit is bad. Can you manually rotate the drum? If so, that probably eliminates any seized bearings. Try rotating the drum while the motor hums. If that allows the motor to run, then the starter circuit is defective. Unless the motor has an external start capacitor, the motor will likely have to be replaced.
