The problem is not repeat not with the batteries. i bought another sweeper from a local department store. when i got it home i put the new battery in the old sweeper, and it ran for about a minute. then i put the old battery in the new machine and it ran fine. so the problem is not the battery but somewhere betwee the battery pack and the brushes.
m320753 here again; i took one of the swivel sweepers and found that if you remove the plastic gliders on the sweeper, ther are two very small screws under the glide. now carefully remove one cover at a time and you will fina a build up of hair around the gears and connectors . next clean out hair and reassemble, remember to take only one 1 cover off at a time. after cleaning all four 4 corners put in the battery and you can vacuum til the freakin cows come home. the company should really put this in their instructions and give the credit to me along with a hefty thank you check. don't rush boys and girls, uncle mike has already spoken to the head honcho

The problem with the battery is that it is on continuous charge. As with so many of these cordless appliances, the charger never shuts off. Standard Nicad and NiMh batteries cannot be left on continuous charge. They will be ruined fast. There are Nicad and NiMh cells that are rated for continuous charge, but most manufacturers don't use them. They put in standard ones, and rake in the cash when customers keep coming back buying replacement batteries. You can make your batteries last longer buy remembering to stop the charger after about 12 hours. For replacements, you can get a rebuild-it done on the pack and be sure to specify cells that are rated for continuous charge. The cost will usually be the same or less than a battery from the manufacturer, and you will have a reliable long lasting battery.
lelanlelan : "memory" is an old myth. There is no such thing. Doing this advise of intentionally deeply cycling the battery every single charge will only use up their cycle life more quickly. If you can get "3 - 4 years" of life out of them, well even that is rather short considering most appliances are not heavily used and often shallowly cycled. There is something called plate crystallization that tends to happen in intermittent use appliances that are never fully discharged. You fully reverse this by deeply cycling the battery 3 times, and maintain the battery by deeply discharging once out of every 25 or so shallow charges. However, 99% of the time battery failure in these appliances is due to the continuous overcharging charger that is so common with these appliances. Standard Nicad and NiMh batteries can't be left on continuous charge, it ruins them fast. Please see my other post. Also I want to point out that following the advise of replacing the cells with NiMh ones will do absolutely nothing for the swivel sweeper. The swivel sweeper already contains NiMh from the factory. NiMh suffers the same overcharge damage as NiCad. Some people seem to think NiMh is indestructible; They are not.
Guest: What I am saying is that people will attribute any battery failure as "memory", memory is a blanket statement. From my point of view, what people call memory is a myth. It is true that battery manufacturers once did define "memory". It happened when the user doesn't discharge the cell all the way to the same point every time, so that the cell would "memorize" the slightly lower output voltage. However in practice today, that is very rare to happen in practice, and mostly can only be achived in controlled tests. What can happen is plate crystallization, which causes capacity loss and faster self discharge. This can happen, similar to "memory" by not discharging all the way *most* of the time and does not need to be to the same point, and also batteries left on continuous charge can develop this as well. Plate crystallization is not the same thing as memory in the classic definition. However 90 percent of the time battery failure occurs simply being "cooked" to death due to the continuous charge chargers that keep batteries is a continuous state of overcharge. Often batteries are cooked in two years or less and plate crystallization is only rather minimal by then. Perhaps if the battery lasts 5 years can there be significant plate crystallization worth reversing and the possibility of restoring some capacity.

Well the hair in the corners solution will not fix my problem. I got the typical two-for-one deal last year when I got my Swivel Sweepers, so I finally opened the second one. It's new, so has zero dust buildup on contacts. Faulty battery will not run newly opened sweeper either. Old battery will still not get good charge from newly opened charger. Newly opened battery will easily run both old and newly opened sweeper. Older charger and newly opened charger both charge the newly opened battery just fine. So in my case it's clearly, unquestionably the old battery that is the problem!
I own two Swivels since a year or two. Batteries seem depleted, no more capacity. SEEM! Because the real problem is exactly what m320753 is talking about: the hair in the four corners! Clean those corners out - it's so easy to do - you'll get a thrill in minutes (at least my wife got thrilled).
It is quite logical thinking that the batteries are the culprit because a motor which is hindered by so much extra hair friction will slow down, hence draw much more current and hence exhaust the batteries way more quickly.
I didn't say that your batteries couldn't be worn out, but look at the hair first!

Based upon all the complaints and how the ad is written, the batteries are most likely NiCd batteries.
Nickel Cadnium batteries inherently have a "memory" problem when attempting to charge the batteries BEFORE they are Dead. If you will simply use your Swivel Sweeper (or any device) until the batteries are dead, then recharge the batteries, you will obtain 3-4 years of top performance!
If the batteries are replaced with NiMH or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, then you may recharge them at any time of discharge without premature loss of life to the batteries.

I got a new replacement battery, and I have the same problem--the sweeper runs only for 30 seconds than dies. When I put the battery on the charger, I get the red light. Does that light turn green when the battery is fully charged? Help!
These batteries have a limited time for working. If your machine is over 3 or 4 years old, the battery pack is probably tired. It only takes one bad battery cell and the pack will not function. IF the light is not coming on, the problem is likely the charger. If the battery pack was defective, the light would still work, but the battery would not accept a charge. I would test the charger with a voltage meter and see if is putting any current out. If the charger is dead, it could be a result of a shorted battery and a new charger would work initially but it also would burn out. Check the battery pack for any shorted cells.
Hair is a small problem but the battery is the week spot here because of overcharging and just way under power i found a swivel sweeper and the battery would not hold the charge so i just got one of my 7.2 rc car battery and hooked it up and this thing will run for days! especially when i put the 8.4 volt battery
It doesn't have NiCd batteries.....so memory is really not an issue.
Partner pulling ours apart at the moment and mentioned that there are no gears on the bottom right corner (as you are looking at it from the top down.) There are provisions there, but no gears.
Just thought that was worth mentioning for those who are looking at doing the maintainance work.

Change another charger to charge your sweeper battery. if it's ok, it shows your charger is bad; if the LED is still off, it shows your battery is bad.
Oh, I discovered from the owner's manual, that the Swivel Sweeper DOES have Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries!!! No problems with the batteries, but I hate the accumulation of dust on the inside and outside housing. Other than that, it is the greatest lil sweeper thing I have ever seen.
Dear "hansunsux": For about the last 16 years, all I have read and seen from manufacturers of NiCd batteries is the memory problem. I have experienced the same with cordless phones, too. I am surprised that you, as a guru, believe the problem does not exist, yet you have a remedy.
Now, I have heard of a remedy that fixes large capacity NiCd batteries, which is quite dangerous. Use a charger that employs .7 volts above the battery voltage with reverse bias. The length of time is not given. We do not want people doing this because the battery may explode or start a fire, or both. People who have tried this, say the batteries work properly thereafter for many years.
I am not attempting to write condesendingly (check spelling) just wondering if you are an engineer, chemist, or work for a manufacturer of NiCD batteries... I appreciate all of the information you have provided. Thank you. When I am wrong, if I am, I like facts to support my change in position. If you have facts, please share, pretty please.
The light on my charger would not light up but it was new so I knew it should not have been the battery. I tried charging my battery on my mom's charger and it works. It looks like no matter what type of battery you have, some of these sweepers have dodgy chargers. Try getting it replaced as this seems to be a common problem.

After buying my Swivel Sweeper (SS) used on Craigslist maybe a year ago, I fell in lust and discarded my dust mop for hard floors. Now the damn battery is crapping out. I may have "overcharged" it once a few months ago. Charging time is a pain to keep track of. The charger lights up; it will run fine for a while right after charging, but won't hold a charge for many hours without going into slug mode. Hoping the clean-the-gunk-out "solution" of 10/28 was the bomb, I just spent 20 minutes removing, inspecting, and replacing the gear covers, finding almost nothing but clean greasy plastic gears and a couple of stray hairs. BTW, the fuzzy stuff that I hoped was a wad of hair wrapped around the rod turned out to be a felt-like washer/grommet/dust blocker thingy, so don't mess with it. So THAT didn't work. Sorry, dude--no big check. Whether the batteries are Ni Cads, NiMhs, or nuclear, they should last a lot longer and not be overchargeable. My little 6-hour AA battery charger shuts itself off after that time to avoid overcharging; these bastards oughta build that into their chargers. Domvac, how does one "check the battery pack for any shorted cells"? Please be precise and detailed. BTW P.S.: re the 10/8 allegation of probs with cordless phone batts, I've used cordless phones for up to 6-7 years, with them parked in the charger stand without needing to replace the battery pack, so I dunno what the deal is there. I guess I'm biting the bullet and going for one of the $12-17 replacement batteries on Amazon.
