My dad's K5SS Mixer is grinding/growling Toward the rear of the machine. The more it is under load the more you hear it. When trying to identify where it is coming from it right about where the Spherical Bronze Bushing at the back of the electric motor is. I have it all disassembled and am wondering how I can tell if the bearing is to blame. There does not seem to be any galling of the bearing or shaft there. It all looks smooth. The only thing i have detected is that many of the screws in the machine were almost hand tight. and more important the very tips of the fan toward the stator are shiny like they been rubbing. But I don't see what in the bearing assembly they've been rubbing on. Any Suggestions would be most appreciated. We have a family cookie bake next week and our mixer is invaluable for it. Thanks so much for you kind attention and Merry Christmas, happy Holidays.

Hi. If your mixer is under warranty, call Kitchenaid. They are very good at replacing mixers under warranty.
If you are out of warranty, this is where the fun begins, NOT!
Remove the silver band from around the top of mixer. Remove 4 screws that secure the top cover, remove cover and at the front top of the machine locate the transmission cover. Inspect this cover carefully for cracks. If you find cracks in it...You have just discovered Kitchenaid's dirty little secret. A cheap plastic transmission housing! The failure of this cheap part is the cause of all of the rest of the damage inside the mixer, which may include a destroyed worm gear and shaft, destroyed bearings and their seats. You're not alone. I estimate that thousands of these plastic parts have failed causing great damage to the rest of the mixer
Kitchenaid's replacement housing is made out of metal. If you feel up to the task of repairing the mixer yourself goto the Kitchenaid website and do a search for the parts catalog for your mixer model, these will assist you with disassembly, reassembly and parts ordering.
If you're not up to the task, take it to an authorized repair place once you have put the cover back on.
Even if you're out of warranty, you may be able to have Kitchenaid pay for the replacement parts, they did for my mixer. Be persistent with them and try to get to a manager with your complaint. This cheap piece of plastic has no business being installed on a high-priced machine.

Hi . Chevron FM ALC EP-2 grease is what you need for the lubricant. This has a Mineral Oil base, allowing for it to, at some time, drip into whatever it is that you mix without concern for your health. From what I can, tell this is the only thing that needs to be done. Clean out as much of the old grease as possible.
Goto www.mendingshed.com and download for free a Kitchenaid Service Manual that will cover your mixer.

See what stops it going forward. If it's a rubber pad you can replace or repair it. As far as the pin is concerned. Is the hole worn out or the pin? Measure the pin size and see what diameter it is If you can send me a picture co7196@yahoo .com and we'll come up with a satisfactory resolve. Ned

If it is similar to my KSM 150 Mixer, then you just need to reset the stator winding. There is a black wire that attaches above the brush on one side just sitting on top of the brush slide that needs to be pushed back. Make sure it is not plugged in and push it back with a screw driver.
