The computer should show you a key to hit to enter the setup. Nomally the keys may be F2, F10, DEL, or some other key.
If your computer does not even give you any display, then you can't enter setup--it's failing the POST which means it won't work at all.
In a laptop, you could take it apart far enough to find the CMOS battery and disconnect it to reset the CMOS, but I'm thinking you might have a hardware problem here--like maybe a motherboard.
One thing you can do is unplug it, remove the battery, then reinstall the battery, plug it in and try again. In a laptop, anything further will require dissembling the case.

Removing the CMOS battery for about a minute and putting it back in might help restore BIOS to default settings. I have not done this on a laptop yet, but that is generally how you reset BIOS. You may have to find which 'compartment' on the underside of the laptop to unscrew to remove and reseat the CMOS battery.

Bios backdoor for asus laptop

BIOS passwords can be reset in two ways:

1. using software 2. using hardware.

I would first try resetting using software, here are two software apps to reset or retrieve BIOS passwords.

!BIOS - is a PC BIOS toolkit offering password removal/decrypt and BIOS settings modification/backup/restore.
You can download it here:
http://www.syschat.com/download120.html

CmosPwd - Cmos password recovery tools
http://www.syschat.com/download121.html&act=down

You will need to create a bootable Dos, or Linux or NT cd in order to run them.

Good Luck!

Please can you tell me how to reset the cmos on a samsung R510 Laptop

Hello you just have to remove the cmos battery:

10_18_2012_1_51_22_pm.gif
Press the release pad and the battery will pop out
DO NOT have any power on disconnect all power and usb cables
when you do that.

Wait for 10 min. or so with the battery out
and the bios will reset back to factory settings.

Replace the battery and boot up your machine and enter the bios
you kave to configure the boot order.

Here is some youtube videos how you do that:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Intel+D945GTP+bios+setting&oq=Intel+D945GTP+bios+setting&gs_l=youtube.12...55167.59517.0.61846.6.6.0.0.0.0.85.411.6.6.0...0.0...1ac.1j2.lSt1MwgqUkQ

But it depends what bios you have.

Good luck

After replacing on board lithium cell, computer will not boot up. Goes through BIOS ok but no further, even tried replacing hard disk and booting from removable media drives (after setting BIOS...

Did you swap the Cmos jumpers from 1-2 to 2-3 to clear Cmos before replacing battery and if so, did you return them to their original position (normal as opposed to clear cmos)? If the jumper is still in the clear Cmos position, the board will not boot.

Try changing the Cmos battery, it may appear to work but may not be suited to the board

Disconnect all drives except the hard drive, unplug usb and sound cables, if fitted, remove graphics card and either test with another one or use the onboard graphics.

I have a ps/2 keyboard but my ps/2 keyboard com port not working. so i sold a USB keyboard but my CMOS settings are enabled only OS.so i canot entre CMOS setting by keyboard

Hi,
Unfortunately BIOS reset will not help you, the default setting for USB keyboard support is set to OS and you need set it to BIOS. I would recommend you to go with your mainboard to a specialized service, sometimes the problem is only a defective capacitor. If you reset your CMOS, the first boot device will be set to Floppy. You could try updating your BIOS to the latest version (maybe in that version the USB keyboard is set to BIOS) but I don't know if you can create a batch file to update the BIOS automatically, without confirmation from keyboard... The reliable solution is the technician. You can also try to connect your PS2 keyboard to the mainboard using an USB adapter but as I know in that case the keyboard is treated as an USB device...

If this is the solution for your problem, please rate my post, otherwise give us more details.

Andras

Did you pull the Cmos battery. Also on the mother board should be a switch or a jumper that should reset the Bios, or shock it out of its brick state.

ASUS LGA775 mother board

1.Power down your PC.
2.Locate a rocker-style switch at the back of your PC (if applicable), and switch it from the on position (I) to the off position (O).
3.Find the 3-pin jumper near the power supply, typically labeled "clear cmos" or "reset bios".
4.Remove the jumper from the default position (typically connecting the 1st and 2nd pins).
5.Replace the jumper to connect the 2nd and 3rd pins.
6.Push the power button on the front of your PC once.
7.Wait a minute.
8.Return the jumper to its default position, connecting the 1st and 2nd pins.
9.Move the rocker-style switch at the back of your PC (if applicable), to the on (I) position.
10.Power on your PC with its front power button.
If it doesn't work go to alternate options

Alternate Method
1.Locate a rocker-style switch at the back of your PC (if applicable), and switch it from the on position (I) to the off position (O).
2.Remove the CMOS battery. This should be a regular 3V, round, flat watch battery.
3.Wait at least 5 minutes.
4.Reinsert the CMOS battery.
5.Move the rocker-style switch at the back of your PC (if applicable), to the on (I) position.
6.Power on your PC with its front power button.

Alternate Method
1.Turn on your computer and press the key on your keyboard to enter the BIOS. This is typically the Del (delete) key. Pre-built systems from major manufacturers may use a function key such as F1, F2, or F10.
2.Go to the last tab or page of your BIOS.
3.Select an option similar to "restore factory settings".
4.Save your changes and confirm your selection if necessary. This will often be combined with the process of exiting a BIOS. Some BIOS types may have this as a separate option such as "F10: Save Changes".
