You need to download the drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download the drivers: - www.compaq.com/country/cpq_support.html
Since you have an HP, you can order a replacement set of "System Restore" disks from HP, for less than $20 -- much less than buying a "retail" copy of Windows. That set of CDs will have the correct drivers and the same "factory-installed" applications.
If you have access to another system, go to http:\\www.belarc.com and download a free copy of Belarc Advisor. Copy this to a disk or flash drive and install it on the machine in question. This will give you the specific driver that you need to download from intel for your network card. Then go to http:\\www.intel.com and download it.
We had the same problem and tried all of the drivers & even the expired link here, but then went back and discovered the PRO 100 drivers contained in the HP Intel PRO/1000 GT drivers download file sp33671.exe (64 MB), 9.4.21.0 A (4 Sep 2006). Choose to extract to a non-temporary folder, it will produce C:\swsetup\SP33671\PRO100\Win32\ by default and that is where we found the driver. Hope it helps!
