Dealing with the many issues of having a well pump and a water well system can be very trying. There are many things that can go wrong with the shallow well or jet well pump.
- The foot valve or check valve at the bottom will fail. This is often caused by normal deterioration of the metal and it will eventually fall apart. When this happens all the water that you just pumped will go shooting back to where it came from and the pump will be turning on and off very quickly.
- You will get a hole in the pipe or a fitting will loosen up just enough to allow an air leak which will cause the pump to loose prime and run continuously. Finding a small air leak came be mind boggling, be patient and check everything twice…
- Wearing of the impeller and the insides of the pump gives too much space inside and the pump will not be able to make enough pressure to shut down like it once did. You can back down the pressure switch to get it to shut down, but the pump will need to be replaced.
- Dirt can get inside the little hose going to the pressure switch making the on and he off delayed. This will make the shutoff too high and the turn on too low. Take the hose off and blow it out. Remember to also clean out the fittings at the switch and the pump.
- Do not hookup any kind of plastic fittings or pipe directly to the pump. If the pump looses prime it will get very warm and make them leak. Always thread a metal fitting into the pump and then transition to plastic away from the pump.
These are a few of the common things that can go wrong with
shallow well jet pumps.
This is not a complete list as I have seen many crazy things happen. Hopefully this will guide you and help with some of the most common issues that can come up.
