You may be able to get "free" map updates from (illegal) underground sources. But that's not recommended. Yes, you're right, you can simply get a new TomTom GPS and get the latest map(s) for it. Consider getting a TomTom with lifetime maps ....and you won't have to pay for any map updates.
Tom do not seem to overwrite the existing map file. So before trying to install the map, you need to delete the folder that contains the map. (It is important to read the next part before you delete the map folder).Once you have connected your TomTom to the computer, close the TomTom home window. Double click on my computer. You will see the TomTom hard drive as a drive (like you see the CD drive). Double click on that . Once the folders of the TomTom hard drive opens, look for a folder named USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P. (Please note: this name is for American continent. For others, this name will be different). Right click on it. click properties. Check whether the size of this folder is approximately around 1.3 GB to 1.5 GB. This is just to make sure we have the correct folder. After confirming this is the map folder, copy this folder to your computer for back up purpose. Once you have it safely in your computer, delete this folder from the TomTom hardrive. Go back to TomTom homesoftware. Use the map guarantee to update/Upgrade the new map. You will see this time around the installation completes without a problem.
You need a Tom Tom USB Cradle that will allow you to connect your tom tom to a computer. Assuming you already have one, then just connect the Cradle to a working USB port on the computer, then with the computer turned on, plug your GPS into the cradle. It should come on automatically and ask you "Connect to Computer?" Just press Yes on the GPS screen and your GPS will attempt to talk with your computer. It will automatically download updates for your system software and any mapping corrections made by you of other users. If it does not automatically download updates, then you need to launch Tom Tom Home. Once this launches one of the first screens has a button titled "Update My GPS" Just touch this bitton, or click it with your mouse... and you will be away.
Have you installed an expansion memory card in the 720? Sometimes it wont let you download music because you have filled up the internal memory. You need to put music on to the separate expansion card. BUT... when connecting to the computer to update map corrections and software, if you have not selected INTERNAL MEMORY when it connects, it won't be able to find the tom tom software, so it will just think you have another external USB hardrive attached. SO... take the expansion card out of the tom tom, then connect the tom tom to the computer in the normal way - Voila, suddenly it now sees the tom tom and you can update software. But do not download any more music to the internal memory. Ultimately you will have to format the EXTERNAL expansion card to clear it of any tom tom software updates, then download ONLY MUSIC to the external card. Do not hit Update My Tom Tom while connected to the external card - only do this when connected to the internal memory.
The TomTom 520 and 720 are the same unit. the differance is the maps. The 520 has maps of the US and the 720 has maps of Europe. Download the free clearflash utility from TomTom and run it a couple of times. This should clear up your problem. Sometimes the mapset config in the map gets full and it has to be cleared.
If you are trying to change the time while your tomtom is not connected to the computer and using 'operate my device' it will not let you do it.
If you are using the device while it is disconnected from the computer and you still cannot change the time, try and delete the mapsettings.cfg which is in your tomtom map folder eg f:/Australia/Mapssettings.cfg
You have to make a manual back up of the device. Make a new folder on your desk top. Connect your device to your PC and turn it on. Go to my computer and look for tom tom storage device and open it. You will see all the folders that is in your tom tom. Copy and paste just the yellow ones into the new folder. When you have done this you can know reformat your device. Do this by right clicking on the tom tom logo (in my computer). Click fat 32 (full format). This will wipe everything off. Disconnect your device, you will see a red cross on the screen. reset the device with a paper clip (hold in for 30 sec) You will still see the red cross. connect back up to PC and install the latest application of to tom home on to the device. From here you can go to add maps ect, and put your maps back on the device. Tom tom home will give you all the updates your device will be missing. You will only need the maps so don't worry if you can not copy all folders (for whatever reason) you can get everything you need as well as free updates for free via tom tom home. Its only the maps you have to pay for.
It will only tell you the names of the streets if you use the COMPUTER voice. The other voices will not announce street names. So go to your voice selection and pick the computer voice...either male or female.
