Hello JewettKann,

Typically, on the Maytag Neptune dryers, it is the felt gasket that is the cause and source of the noise you're hearing.

There is a felt gasket that runs all around the front and rear of the dryer drum and cabinet door edge (on the backside lip). As the dryer ages, this felt wears out and needs to be replaced to prevent the awful screeching sounds you'll experience, once the metal to metal contact becomes constant.

You can view the parts that need replacing at the following link (Item #17B on the drawing) Called a sound damper pad on some models.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=MDE4000AZW&productCategoryId=0151200&brandId=3048&brandDescription=MAYTAG&modelName=MAYTAG-LAUNDRY&diagramPageId=00004&componentDescription=DOOR&documentId=M0402169&blt=06

This was a fairly common problem with the Neptune line. You can see for yourself by simply turning the drum with your hand and feeling and listening for the rubbing/grinding noise, along the top of the door opening.
If you can get the complete model number off your dryer, you can select the exact line drawing and parts list at the link below to make sure you're looking at your exact model.

I hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

SOURCE: squeaking sound

Sounds as if your rollers are going bad.

You would have to remove the front panel and remove all the screws out of the front to lift top of dryer.

Do not remove any screws out of the back, it will release your drum stabilizer.

Your problem is most common caused by a failing/loosening drive belt that turn the dryer bask by an electric motor.

If you are not familiar with how to replace belts (like the kind on your car engine compartment, I strongly recommend you hire a professional.

What causes a squeaky sound from the engine of an 2000 Isuzu rodeo when engine is running?

it could be one of the belts. if you put a little wax or brake fluid on the belt in a couple of places and the squeak goes away then you either have a loose belt/s or the belts/s need replacing. if no change it could be the timing belt making the noise.

When the dryer begins its process, a long loud "squeaking" sound erupts, the dryer still dries, but this sound may last 5 - 7 minutes, then the squeak diminishes to a soft squeaking sound the remainder of...

The noise is likely coming from a roller which keeps tension on the belt which wraps around the drum. This roller will sometimes squeal as it wears on the shaft to which is mounted Follow the instructions below to replace the Idler roller.

Pull the dryer out enough to get behind it. there is a lower black panel to be removed by taking out all the 5/16" screws around the edge. Swing the panel aside and look into it. You will see the motor to the right. The roller should be between you and the motor. The configuration looks like the picture at the link below.

The belt goes in the grooves on the motor pulley and the flat side runs around the idler pulley, according to the GE chart on this image.
