Washer won't agitate or spin

My washer fills properly, but won't agitate or spin. I tried to turn the agitator by hand, and it will only turn approx 1 inch either direction, like a locked steering wheel does. Water drains at right time, rinse cycle runs at right time, just no agitation or spin cycle. I purchased it in 1998, but it could have been 1997...it came new in a home that I purchased in 1998. Please describe the specifics of your problem below. We'll add your post as a comment to nitanita's Washer won't agitate or spin problem, and notify you when a new solution is offered.

  • Thawed Jul 15, 2008

I have the 'locked steering wheel' problem as well ... and my problem is similar to Kubata Joe's below. It fills with water but then will not spin or agitate or drain ... except to leak onto the floor.

I drained it by hand, took off the cabinet and found that it was leaking around where the motor shaft enters the pump. I disconnected the hoses and drained the water (read flooded laundry room) ... now what.

I replaced the couple less than a year ago... i haven't checked it yet, but why would all of this happen at once??!!?

There is a Roper top load washer in the place I rent also. It will agitate fine but won't drain or spin on its' own. I can drain it manually by moving the drain hose below the floor level but then no spin (on any cycle) so I know it is not "plugged" with something. It does "try to do something" when it is supposed to spin, because I forgot to advance the dial to off once after manually draining tub and smelled a "burning smell" after a while. Thank you.

To those who are posting that your washer is filling but not agitating or spinning, check the lid switch. Often times the bar that engages the lid switch gets bent or some play in it and will not fully engage the switch. You can check the switch by feeling for the switch (usually on the left side near the back - under the top) and engaging it with a screwdriver. I was able to get mine working by pounding it with my fist above the switch, with the door closed (Fonzi style :) I then bent the metal bar by holding it with pliers, and with the door halfway open, I pryed the door up while holding the bar tightly with the pliers.

The original is an old post, but the problem still exists. My ROPER machine that is 3 years old wouldn't agitate or spin. It would fill with water, no problem. So, after syphoning out the water and removing the clothes I took the top of the machine off and found that the lid switch sensor had a burned out wire. Not a big deal. It's a 20 dollar part, however my nephew is smarter than the people who make the machines to ensure they do break down so you have to order parts. He went to the shop and got a piece of appropriate gauge wire and replaced it himself. 30 minutes later it was fixed and I was doing laundry. Don't give up. Do a search on the internet for your specific problem, enter you machine model number, not on a forum, but an actual problem solving site for your brand of machine. You should get a return of the most likely problem and a list of what it takes to fix it. Don't listen to yahoo's who tell you to toss it. I'd have made a huge mistake in tossing a perfectly fixable machine with very little effort and time investment even if I had bought the part. The level of difficulty in replacing the sensor myself would have been do-able. Thanks!

My Roper washing machine will fill with water but nothing else. It will not advance. When I turn the dial to advance it manually, it will not drain, spin, anything. You can hear a hum from the motor and there seems to be a burning smell. Is it possible that this could be the switch even though it seems like the motor is trying to work? \r\nAlso, I changed the coupler but that was not the problem.
Thanks!!

That doesn't sound like a switch problem, this SOUNDS like you might have a transmission problem. That burning smell is a fine indicator along with the motor working, but no action taking place. If you have someone handy to take the machine apart, take off the casing. There is a map of the "innards" and the transmission isn't a big part at all, but it does cost less than 200 bucks and some skill in replacing. I sure wish you the best of luck. If you can't afford the part or someone to look at it, you might check out your local Garage Sale or Auction sites on Facebook. My town has about 4 different ones on FB and at that kind of local driving distance, You can plug up their machine at their house to make sure it spins and agitates. I found a good backup one for only 20 bucks.. JUST IN CASE!

I forgot to add, a good place for manuals if you've lost or can't find yours is at manualsonline.com and repairclinic.com is helpful in looking for what parts would cost and some DIY info as well. Best wishes

What's a coupler? who do i fix it?

  • Anonymous Nov 05, 2010

Hello, I bought a Roper Washer top load. back in 1998, and twice I had the same problem, my washer wouldn't spin or drain. So we had someone come fix it the first time about 6 years ago and he took it apart the problem was it was clogged theres a white piece in the front connected to the black tubes in front had a pair of my 5 year old daughters underwear and a couple socks in there. Put it back together and worked ever since till earlier tonight. We took it apart ourselves and my boyfriends sock was in it. Well now its put back together and Works again. Hope this helps other people...

Check the coupler. its between the motor and transmission. there easy to install and are usually under 20.00. 4 clips hold the motor and pump in. remove these and the motor comes right out. hope this helps

It's not worth fixing!
If it's 10 years old or more, better off replacing it with a newer machine which will be much more efficient!

Motor Coupling If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and transmission.

Drive Belt If the washer won't spin or agitate, check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't spin or agitate properly.

Drive Motor If the washer won't spin or agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged, replace it.
Stator Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the stator assembly might be burned out. The stator is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the stator burns out the washer won't spin or agitate. Check the stator for continuity. This part is often misdiagnosed.

Door or Lid Latch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Motor Control Board If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor control board might be defective. The motor control board provides power to the motor as well as direction and force. If the motor control board is defective the washer may not work at all or function properly.

Old model rca washer machine...will not agitate/wash the clothes, does spin.

If the washer fills up with water and you hear the motor running but the agitator doesn’t move, the agitator coupling is the most likely problem. First pump the water out by turning the timer to spin. Once the water is out, turn the washer off. Now pull up on the agitator until it comes off (it may be hard to pull off). Now that the agitator is off, you can see the agitator coupling, reach down and try to turn the coupling. If the coupling turns freely, it is striped out and needs to be replaced.

Washer won't agitate or spin

what you need is a motor coupling. it connects to the motor and the other end of connects to the transmission. the part about 10.00 but i recomend having a professional install it because it can be tricky. i suggest you buy the part at a parts store or even online to get it even cheaper and then have someone install.
