My whirlpool washer is making a grinding noise. When I first put a load in it was fine and once it go to the rinse cycle it started grinding and now wont do nothing at all

It needs a new gearbox and clutch. It's not really the sort of job you can do yourself. The gearcase is $252, and the clutch is $51. Time for a new Whirlpool front loader. Mine is just as big and uses a tenth of the water and electricity.

That grinding noise your hearing is most likely the center bearing in a maytag they are usally very easy to break and mainly because when they make maytags they dont put the right type of grease on the bearing itself which causes the machines not to last the 10 years that we all think they could. This repair is honestly not worth the amount of money that it would cost to repair I've seen technicians price this job out between 450 as a low and 600 as a high and considering you can buy a brand new top loader for 2-400 it really isnt worth the effort in trying to resurect the machine. Please also note maytags are notorious for the center bearings disintergrating because of poor factory assembly. Sorry about the bad news. when looking for a new washer if your going with a top loader stick to the whirlpool there easy to fix cheap for parts and last alot longer. Sounds like you may have lost your basket drive and clutch assembly. This is a pretty involved job to replace for sure, and requires you to remove the inner basket, drop the transmission, etc. Does the unit make any wierd noises, like popping or grinding? Does it agitate ok in wash? I would bet almost for sure that its that basket drive and attached sub-pack thats went bad. remove the top access panel 3 screws in top rear. now look around and push on the drum from top it has suspension shocks and springs like your car they should resist any movements. look/wiggle the concrete balance blocks , no cracks or loose. inside the tub are the arm solid /not loose. run it with the top open what do you see/hear and where look under the rubber flap in front did anything get under the tub
grinding noises are never a good sign. My best guess is that the motor coupling is shot. Very inexpensive repair if you're handy. unplug and tip the machine back. locate the motor and remove the clips holding the motor/pump assembly to the transmission. carefully remove the motor and if the coupling is shot, replace. put it back together and should be good to go.
