The pop you heard is the sound of a capacitor blowing out. Do not turn your TV on because it might cause more problems. What you need to do right now is to bring your TV to a technician and have it fixed. Capacitors only cost less than $5, the labor would of course cost more... This can be a 15-30 minute job for the technician. I just hope that no other parts were damaged after you switched it back on.

I have a Sony 50" WEGA rear projection tv. Last night it made a popping sound and then the screen went black. I could still hear audio at that time. I turned the tv off and now there is a blinking red...

It sounds lamp in tv got broken as you heard pop sound of it, replace lamp in tv to fix the issue.
Blinking light would be Lamp light at tv front that shows lamp is dead.
Lamp replacement procedure is easy and mentioned in tv user manual.

Most likely the loud pop that you heard was the lamp filament shattering and you can verify that by physically inspecting it,the UHP lamps have a life expectancy of 6000 to 8000 lamp hours when they are Phillips and from 3500 to 4500 lamp hours if it is an Osram,and you can find this items on discount-merchant.com or on Ebay
