Frigidaire 14.8 Cu. Ft. Chest Freezer - White Logo
Anonymous Posted on Dec 29, 2009

My wife and I bought a Kenmore chest freezer (14.8 cubic foot) about 6 weeks ago. It is made by Frigidaire for Sears, and the model number is #253.165.42105, serial # WB94341279. It has been working OK. However, I put two high-quality thermometers in the freezer, one deep in the center of the freezer and the other in one of the baskets near the top of the freezer. The temperature setting was on #5 out of a possible 8, where 8 is the coldest. The temperature in the center ranged from -13.2F to +8.1F, a difference of nearly 23F degrees. The basket thermometer ranged from -7F to 18F, a difference of 25F degrees. That seems to be far too great a swing in temperatures ? and it was measured without the door being opened except to read the thermometers. I?m sure this model freezer has a factory specification for the maximum temperature differential allowable before the unit turns back on to lower the temperature. Could you please let me know what it is? Everywhere I read it says that frozen food should be kept below +5F degrees for maximum safety and quality. Even the center of the freezer doesn?t stay below +5F degrees. Please let me know the spec for the maximum temperature differential for this freezer and what I should do about its performance. Thank you.

This is well with in factory specifications. Hot air rises and cold air drops. Because a chest freezer does not have a fan to circulate the air it is normal for the basket to be warmer than the bottom of the freezer. The bottom of the freezer is used for food you want to keep for a longer period of time. What you store in the basket is food you will freeze for a short period of time. Ice cream should not be kept in the basket. As you fill your freezer with food you will find that the temperature will equal out because the frozen food will take up the place of the frozen air which will give you a more stable freezer temperature.
Try your test when you have it full of food.

Yesterday the door on my 14 cubic ft upright freezer did not stay shut tight (it was ajar about 1 inch for about 6 hours). When I became aware I closed and locked the door to be sure it stayed shut, but...

it may take upto24 hours to settle to -18C,remember it has to cool right through the food in the freezer,as well as the walls.also if the food went soft, it is spoilt......cook meat asap then refreeze.

Some food is thawing in my chest freezer

these frigidaire made freezers are notorious for having restrictions in the sealed systems that will cause exactly what your describing.

what happens is oil moves around in the freon system and pools up in the capillary tubes and the freon is not able to flow properly. if the unit is under 5 yrs old then should be inwarranty to sears. if its over 5 then probably cheaper to purchase a new one..
