the Heaviest string of each string pair is placed at the top (closest to your nose). In fact, if you look at the nut, (the notched thingy that spaces and holds the strings at the right spacing up by the tuning pegs) the notches in nut are wider than the paired string for this reason. That may not be true on all 12 strings but it is on mine. So the typical arrangement is heavy string, matching string. Heavy String, matching string. Except on the bottom 3 pairs where the actual string thickness can be the same. One caution note here....when tuning a 12 string, tune it a whole step lower. So rather than tuning it at EADGBE, tune it at DGCFAD then use a capo on the 2nd fret to bring the tuning up to EADGBE.
The reason for tuning a whole step lower is because on the top 3 pairs of strings you normally tune the thinner string an octave higher to give that 12 string sound. So if you start tuning at EADGBE, those thinner strings for the top EAD strings are going to be pretty tight and they will snap. So much safer to tune a whole step lower and just use a capo!!! Good question, tuners can be simple and some are complicated
a basic automatic guitar tuner you would not have to do anything to the settings, just tune normal on the E string then slowly down tune to D most tuners are a little sensitive, so go slow
and one thing I always do is go lower than the note I'm tuning to then tune up tell it's correct, strings seem to stay in tune better

put a battery in your guitar. It goes in the space at the bottom, usually where you connect your cable to your amp.
Then hold the guitar as you usually would.
Look for a little board with buttons on the side of the guitar to turn on the tuner: )

This is an intonation issue. If you can find a music store that works with violins, talk to someone there who will certainly be better informed than I am. At least they can tell you if it's worth your time to fix it, or more cost effective to replace it.

Did you try to get to Global mode, and then check if the tune is 440 hz?
Check the Global Settings. The tuning might either be altered or the key transposed..

Tell her to tune all strings below the pitch and always go up to the pitch, never down because of slack in the tuning keys. The gears will have a slight bit of play in them. If coming down and stopping at the right place, they will loosen and loose tuning when she lets go. Tuning from below and go up to the pitch will correct that. (more noticeable on electric) Also, I would take it to a shop to have the intonation checked and tuned if necessary.

Before turning the unit on, press and hold down the calib/batt switch to check the condition of the battery on the battery meter.

Then either plug in your electric guitar to the input side of the AG-6 or if tuning an acoustic guitar without electronics placing the AG-6 near the front of the guitar should work. You will not need to press a button to select which string you are about to tune. The AG-6 will detect it and the corresponding light will turn on when it is tuned within range.

Turn on the AG-6 and start by striking the low E (thickest) string while open. This is the number 6 string or 6E. Slowly turn the guitars low E tuning key untill the red LED below the 6E marking on the AG-6 lights up. Continue stricking the open string and turning the key untill the needle centers on zero and the 6E light remains on.

Repeat this for the open A string untill the 5A light turns on and the needle centers on zero.

Repeat for the remaining four strings, 4D 3G 2B and 1E, being careful not to over tighten and break them.

Tip: It may be a good idea once the low E string is tuned, to tune the rest manually, especially new strings or strings way out of tune. Then tune again using the AG-6 tuner.

If installing fresh strings you will probably need to stretch each string and re-tune, possibly several times, before they hold their tuning.

If you are marginally interested in the process of tuning the piano, and your main motivation is to save the cost of a professional tuning, bite the bullet and engage the services of a qualified tuner. Trying to do it yourself will become overwhelming very quickly. If, however, you are genuinely interested in the skill of tuning, and willing to invest the time and effort to become good at it, then get yourself a star tipped tuning hammer and some mutes (eBay will do) and start to see what you can do to make your piano sound better. Begin by getting the whine out of individual notes by tuning the strings to each other. Search out the "Every which way you can" tuning article by Kent Swafford on your favorite search engine for an introduction to aural tuning. If you're inclined to start out with an electronic tuning aid, check out Tunelab Pro - a free, fully functional demo is available for download to your laptop. Remember, however, that an electronic aid only shows you whether you've hit your target for any given string. Learning how to finess the physical motions of tuning so that the string stays on target for more than a few minutes is another process altogether. If your first couple of forays into trying to tune don't drive you around the bend, then consider finding a qualified piano technician who would be willing to provide lessons for a fee. If your interest holds up, investigate the resources for learning that are available through the Piano Technicians Guild. Their source books and monthly journals are second to none, but unless you are committed enough to the process to become an associate member, the non-member prices for materials are pretty high. "Piano Servicing" by Reblitz is another excellent source of knowledge. It might be in your local library.
