you can easily take out the scroll ball with a thumbtack or paper clip, just slide it under the silver metal surrounding it and GENTLY lift up..
when you get underneath clean the ball and the underside motherboard with a dry cloth... replace the ball and see if this works
if not , you will need your phone replaced.. also, you will be able to see if there is water damage by doing this, as there is an indicator under this scroll ball that will show up pink if there is water damage (which may be the reason that you are having this problem)
this happens frequently though, that the scroll ball functions stop working as a result of the oils on your skin
The balls on the blackberry's get clogged up with finger oil, skin, and all sorts of grime I think. But I fixed mine by shutting the phone down and then rubbing hard against the roll ball in each direction and pushing each time until the clicker under the roll ball clicked. You could also try alcohol.
It is a very common problem. You just need a new trackball. Should be about $25. If you want to make it work temporary, then just removed it and clean the trackball and the phone part under it (on the phone itself) with 99% alcohol. It might work for a while again
All you have to do is take a sheet of paper with print on it. Take the battery out of you phone. Next do a figure eight motion with the ball side down on the phone about 10 times. There is something on the ink on the paper that will make this work again. good luck
Cleaning the track ball on blackberry phones. Remove the metal ring then the ball mechanism remember how you removed it because it needs to go in the same way. You can also try removing the battery from phone taking a qtip with alcohol the higher the percentage of alcohol the better. and wiping and rolling the ball around even without removing it from the phone. this usually helps unless the ball is extremely dirty. Below are step by step ins for removing the ball. just follow the link Removing blackberry tracball (non BOLD)
Pop the ring around the track ball out with a small blade or your finger nail. Three double prongs hold it in place (bottom and both sides, none on top). Turn device over and gently tap the back. Track ball will release once ring is removed. At this point you can view the track ball and see exactely what is causing the block. Clean if needed with q-tip or remove lint/debris/etc... Just did this with my 8830. Working perfectly now. - {would not scroll down at all prior to}
