The background of my ps3 menu is in black and white with only some color on some hilighted items. I just got a hdtv and I thought it was all in color, if my memory serves me correctly, before but I could be wrong. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

This problem is because your PS3 software has become corrupt. The following steps will cure the problem but you will lose saved games and all other data. Your trophies will not be affected as these are stored by the Playstation Network.
Step 1. Turn your PS3 onto standby (Red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, beep 5 seconds later then beep once more 5 seconds later and then turn back to standby. Release the power button.
Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep twice quickly. Let go of the power button as soon as you hear these two beeps.
Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to plug in a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Do this and it will boot into the recovery menu.
Step 5. Choose option 5 (Restore PS3 system). This will re-install the PS3 software and restart the console.
Step 6. When the PS3 restarts you will be asked to enter the time and date and other information. When the setup is complete your PS3 will boot into the home menu normally.

That sounds like hardware failure. If your system will not even boot in the XMB menu system then your only options would be to either try to do a full restore (which will more than likely wipe your personal data) or try to call Sony for repair options.

Perform a system restore on a fat PS3:
1. Power Off the PS3
2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.
3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).
4. Restore your backup (If you created one before your console broke).

Perform a full restore on a slim PS3:
1. Power off the PS3
2. Hold the power button for a long time, the system will restart 2 times, keep holding the button until the restore is complete.

Buy a decent TV with HDMI. Then connect using a hdmi cable instead of old AV. Your ps3 is also a hd blu ray player, no good on an old tv!
