The memory cards in most cameras is removable and the pictures can be downloaded without the camera. The memory card is usually located behind a door in the camera. you release it by pressing on it or pressing a release button. notice the position of it as you remove it because you are going to want to put it back in exactly as you removed it when you are finished dowloading your pictures.
To download the pictures, you do not need any special software; but you do need to connect the card to the computer. You can buy a card reader from any computer store. It plugs into a USB port. Insert the card into the reader and then plug the reader into the USB port. Usually, after a few seconds the computer will recognize the reader and ask you what you want to do. Choose the next to last option to open and show files. My Computer (Explorer)will open and you should be able see a listing of your picture files. Using Explorer, you can copy the files to where ever you wnat to put them.
After you have copied the files to your computer, you can delete them from the card (though I wouldn't do that until you have verified that they have indeed been loded onto your computer). However, some cameras do not like it when you delete the pictures on the card by using Explorer. In that case, put the card back into the camera and using the camera tools, format the card.
If you want to see your pictures, while in Explorer (My Computer), double click on a picture file and it will open in software already on the computer.

If you have XP or newer operating system or an Apple computer product, it should recognize your camera via Plug and Play. Windows operating system should bring up a wizard within seconds of you camera being plugged into the USB port that will guide you though downloading images.
