The freezer section doesn't cool properly and food is only just frozen. At least once a day, it's temp rises to about -4 before cooling again. Fridge seems to be working OK. I have emptied the freezer and switched it off for 1-2 days to defrost it + cleaning all visible dust etc from the back and underneath.

Putting in the wrong water filter will not effect the smell in your refrigerator. At times the granules in a water filter will break down and get into your water dispenser and ice cube tray. This should not create a bad smell, just cloudy water.
Your plastic liner in your refrigerator has pores and holds odor. You have something in your fresh food section or freezer that is spoiled. Your fresh food section receives cooling air from your freezer. If you have a spoiled product in your freezer you will not smell it because it is frozen. But, as the cooling air goes into your fresh food section and cools down you will smell it.
Find the bad product in your freezer and discard.
With a 50% solution of white vinegar and water wash the plastic liner.
Now you can put a tray of baking soda in your unit, until you purchase deodorizers based on temperature requirements, one especially designed for the freezer section and one for fresh food section. These deodorizer are about $12.00 each.

You did not provide a model number, so I can only advise in general terms.
The basic operation of a combo freezer/fresh food section unit are the same.
Generally, the fresh food section does not have a independent cooling source. It gets its cooling from the freezer section. There is a air damper from the freezer to the fresh food section. This air damper is controlled by a thermostat. I suspect that either the thermostat is bad or the damper. Your air damper is wide open.
The other problem is, your unit is not designed to operated in a garage. If you have a warrantee or a service contract it will be cancelled by the service company. Your electrical components can short out or corrode from the drastic change in temperature. Your control board can fail due to static in the air or condensate.

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for.
Hi, There are a few reasons why the refrigerator part will not cool...here are a couple of tips that will help you to figure out why the refrigerantor is not cooling...
It is probably the control board and since it's new it's still under warranty so a certified Frigidaire repair man will fix it without charge. There should be a telephone number with the paperwork you received when you bought it.
Make it a habit to defrost it every week. You see, when ice forms around the evaporator tubes (which runs around the walls of fridge and freezer), heat exchange reduces (that means heat is no longer absorbed from the things inside the refrigerator) and cooling stops. See whether freezer walls or fridge walls are damaged. Do not use knives or any other sharp tools to remove ice. Do not forcefully remove items that are difficult to take out from the freezer. Defrost and remove them.
Most all cooling systems need to be in an ambient temp of about 60-65 degrees. If not, it needs a low ambient control. This helps keep the high side pressure high enough so you have the proper pressure drop accross the expansion device. This applies to coolers, freezers, a/c units, and so on. I also think, if it keeps things frozen like you want, where's the problem? You make have a control just acting stupid.
Sounds like bad cold control. Replace it. I cannot see your repyl due to some tech issue w/ the site, so it may be a day or so before I can reply again. Please leave feedback for me if appropriate. Thanks
not necessarily, is it maintaining temp? all food staying frozen? especially ice creams if stored in there. most newer freezers displace the heat generated while cooling the food through copper lines running through sides of unit, helps to cut down on air temp differences between the inside (0 degrees) and outside temp to prevent moisture and possible condensation causing premature rusting of unit
