A runtime error is an error that occurs during the execution of a program. In contrast, compile-time errors occur while a program is being compiled. Runtime errors indicate bugs in the program or problems that the designers had anticipated but could do nothing about.
The runtime or run-time error message can be caused by:
1. Confliction with TSR or other running program
2. Software issue
3. Computer Virus
4. Memory issue
1. Confliction with TSR or other running program
Short for Terminate-and-stay-resident, a TSR is a software program that remains in memory until it is needed, and then performs some function. An good example of a TSR is a Virus Scanner, which must remain loaded in memory to help protect your computer from computer viruses.
If you are encountering a runtime error message while in Windows or above ensure that the issue is not being caused by a third-party program or TSR by end tasking all open programs.
If, after end tasking all TSRs, you continue to experience the same issue and are running Windows 95 or Windows 98, verify that no utility or program is being loaded in the autoexec.bat / config.sys that is causing your issue by temporally renaming the files. To do this, follow the below instructions.
1. Boot to a MS-DOS prompt.
2. Once at the MS-DOS prompt, type:
cd <press enter>
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ch <press enter>
ren config.sys config.ch <press enter>
Once completed, reboot the computer.
2. Software issue
If your issue persists it is possible that the program, utility or game causing the runtime error may have issues. Verify through the developer's web site that all updates or patches that may be available have been downloaded and applied.
If no patches or updates are available, attempt to uninstall and/or reinstall the program that is causing the issue. If you are having a runtime error in your operating system, reinstall the operating system.
3. Computer virus
Because computer viruses are capable of tampering with the system settings / memory it is possible for a computer virus to generate a runtime error. If you are currently running a virus protection program on your computer ensure it has the latest updated patch or .dat file.
If you do not have a computer virus protection program it is recommended one be purchased or that a demo be temporarily downloaded to scan your computer hard disk drive for viruses.
4. Memory issue
Finally, if you have followed all of the above recommendations, it is possible that you may be encountering a hardware / memory related issue. We recommend that you first contact the developer of the program causing the issue for any possible solutions. If no solutions are found, we recommend you contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer for additional recommendations and/or service.

The monitor shuts itself down as a protection feature. Look at the monitor manual if you got one.
Restart the computer and enter Windows Safe mode. Change the settings to a supported setting. Restart the computer so that the new settings take effect.
-Right click the desktop
-Select Properties
-Click the Settings tab
-Click the Advanced button
-Click the Monitor tab
-Select: Hide modes that this monitor cannot display
-Select a different Screen refresh rate
-Click Apply twice and then Click OK
You should also try to modify your resolution.
Hide modes that this monitor cannot display -specifies whether the list under Refresh Frequency will include modes that are not supported by your monitor. Choosing a mode that is inappropriate for your monitor may cause severe display problems and could damage your hardware. You must be logged on as a member of the Administrator€@trade;s group in order to view unsupported modes.
You should also update your video card drivers and monitor driver if you have one, and try your computer with another monitor and another video card to see if the problem is software or hardware.

Good Luck

Acer Aspire 5100 laptop's screen remains black at start-up

This is probably a hardware issue with the monitor. Just to make sure, uninstall, and reinstall the monitor's driver. If that doesn't fix it, it's a hardware issue.

You will have to either take it to a shop, or contact the manufacturer (your computer should be under warranty if you've had it for less than a year).

Acer aspire 5100 - screen is turned off, cant turn it back on

The bios beep codes indicate the video card is not working, so you won't see anything on the screen.

Your video card is either dead, or is not contacting the board correctly.
If you are keen to open it up I will offer instructions to assist you. But in reality, your safest bet is to take it to a laptop shop and get them to do it. There are a lot of tiny screws in these things.

Acer Aspire 5100 will not log on

If you have a Finger Print scanner (on select models), it may have failed, if you do not have this device , you may have installed malware - try rebooting and after you see the Acer screen start tapping F8 to get to speacial boot menu - choose Safe Mode and see if you can log in. If still unable, you will have to perform a system recovery - Acer provides an alternate way to recover - when you start the computer you see the Acer logo screen - after this displays hold down the Alt Key by the spacebar and tap the F10 key at the top of the keyboard once or twice - this will start the Acer E-Recovery program - follow the on screen instructions.
