Try turning it on while manually pulling the lens assembly ever so lightly. Also try the same thing pushing it in, if that doesn't work.
Hope that works. Ed

When I turn on my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W35 the screen is dark with the word "Access" on it, moments later it tells me to power it off adn on again, any ideas?

Its lens error in your DSC-W35 camera.
Lens mechanism is either stuck or not retract completely and system control sense this error. Please replace lens assembly to get it fixed because lens mechanism is not repairable.
Thanks.

The zoom lens does not retract on dsc-w1/w12

I've had the same problem on rare occasion. Usually, I just wait a few seconds, then turn the camera on... wait a few more secs, turn off... repeat as necessary. When all that doesn't work, I've replaced with new batteries & the problem is solved.

Sony Cybershot dsc-p73 dropped

I also dropped this camera from waist high and the lens was stuck out and would not retract or let me do anything. I ended up having it sent to Sony to replace the lens and it cost me $200. I paid $300 for the camera to begin with but to me this was the BEST camera I'd ever had and was worth it. Before repairing it, I bought a new Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 since the original one I had dropped was no longer available. I was NOT pleased with the quality of the new camera at all and it was supposed to be better than the one I dropped. That's when I decided it was worth repairing the broken one and worth the cost.

After switching on - the lens extends and retracts repeatedly

I had the same issue and thought me Ebay camera was trash. I put the batteries back on the charger over night and it worked properly in the morning. Looked to be a low power issue, but my lens did look like it was all cocked, grinding and stalling. perhaps the camera reset itself with no batteries in it for a few hours> I was very relieved.
