Had the same issue with my DMC-FZ50 for a couple weeks, and tried turning it onn and off countless times. I could hear something happening inside the lens on start-up and surmised the internal shutter was trying to open but wasn't able to. I guessed that the turn off/turn on idea was to resend the command impulse to open the shutter. So.... I t urned it on while repeatedly hitting the side of the lens firmly with the palm of my hand and.....it worked!!!!

Worked for me, too! Problem started happening the first time I put my newly acquired Olympus FL50 flash unit in the hot shoe. Camera and flash have worked flawlessly together ever since.

When the camera is set to autofocus, let the camera do the focusing. If you want to focus manually, turn off the autofocus so you can turn the focusing ring.

While looking through the viewfinder, turn the diopter adjustment knob just above and right of the viewfinder to adjust it until the focus marks and other information in the viewfinder become sharp to your eye.

The impact damage to the lens will require complete disassembly to repair. These are quite complicated but can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

Mine does exactly the same - still holds all it's stored photos but seems to struggle to focus when turned on, then gives up & comes up with the 'turn camera off' message. Get the feeling it's something to do with whatever makes the camera focus.

System Error (Focus)

The systems control board has detected a problem with the auto focus lens, the focus is controlled by a tiny motor that has jammed or there is a mechanical issue with the camera lens. It will require a technician that is highly skilled to deal with the situation, but the repair cost would probably not be justified.

Camara doesn't take pictures

when a please turn on and off again appears there is normally a fault with or in the lens. I dont like to suggest that the camera must be opened by anyone that is not qualified to do the repairs because these cameras have components in that could be damaged and will only make the problem worse.
