If this is the model I am thinking of, Sony has a recall on the light engine. They are going bad in many of the Grand Wegas. Call them up and they should offer a new tv. You can either get a BRAND NEW lcd tv for free, but it is going to be smaller than your current one. Or you can get a different size for a reduced price. Late last year (november 2009) my grandma saw a red band at the top of the display. We called up Sony and we got a BRAND NEW 46" 120hz Sony Bravia for about $250 if I remember correctly. And since it is a new tv, you get a new warrenty. You also get to keep your current grand wega because they simply don't want them. I stongly recommend calling them up because this will give you a new tv. Spread the word.
I have a KDF-50E2000 bought in 2006. The lamp replacement indicator came on for several months before the bulb actually blew out. All the while this pinkish line at the top of my screen went from like 1 inch to 8 inches. I assumed the problem had to do with the bulb getting weaker. I bought a new bulb, then I could really see a band plus a green stripe below the pinkish one.
I saw where Sony extended the warranty on this issue with the optical block. However when I called Sony and spoke to a girl in Manila, she said it "wasn't not the issue"; therefore i was on my own.
I waited until later that evening and called Sony parts department. I told them I'd like to buy a part but I didn't know what I needed. <White Lie> I explained what the TV screen was doing; they then told me that I was covered. So they made an apppointment with their authorized service agent. Also an agent from Sony also called me the next am and said they know what the problem is, and everything will be taken care of at NOOOO cost to me!
They came out within a week with a "NEW/ not refurbished" Optical Block and reinstalled it and was gone. TV is like new once again.
So if you are having lines at the top of the screen issues; call Sony and get it taken care of before it expires in June 2010
