The motor is spring loaded to keep tention on the belt. The belt is designed to slip. When the washer is full of water the motor starts at 1725 RPM and the belt is a little loose. As the drum empties its water the belt gets tighter and the speed picks up to spin the water out of the cloths. If the cloths are not comming out as dry as they should, replace the belt. As the belt starts to wear it becomes shiny and doesn't grip the pully properly and slips too much.
I hope this helps.

The machine will not agitate. The belt is good and does not slip. The motor is humming, and seems to be trying to run, but something seems to be stuck.

Unplug the machine undo the belt. Turn the big plastic pulley int he middle counter clockwise if it turns freely with no noise then transmission is fine. Then check to see if the pump pulley movesfreely. If it does then you have a bad motor. Any noises before this problem?

The spinner doesn;t spin in one direction

The shrieking noise is the rubber belt slipping when the motor engages it to turn the
agitator. The belt can be tightened similarly to the fan belt on an automobile. Remove
the back panel of the washing machine and locate the adjustment bolt. After loosening
it the pulley will swivel, allowing the belt to be tightened to the proper tension. You can use
a lever to put tension on the belt when retightening the adjustment bolt, but be careful not
to overtighten the belt or it will stress the bearings of the pulleys engaged by the belt and
shorten the belt life.

Loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps

Heavy Duty Speed Queen top loader, HA 4011-3062, with a slow spin

I have a related problem and I just learned on the net that the Vbelt is supposed to slip in "idle" mode while the water pump will do more work.
It is also supposed to slip slightly while speeding the spinning up so as to not cause motor overload.A kind of half clutch function that allows for slipping. This slipping is controlled by the tensioner.

My guess is that your machine's v belt slips too much and thus does not spin fast enough. You replaced the belts, I would look at the tensioner now.

Won't spin

Sounds to me, your belt is slipping. The motor tensions the belt with springs. The motor slides in grooves to keep the belt tensioned. These grooves get gooked up with dust, dirt, rust, slime, etc. Move the motor back and forth a few time to clean the grooves. Also spray some lubricant on it to help clean it and make it slide freely. Be sure both sides slide back and forth in their groove. After doing this, your belt should stay tensioned enough not to slip during the spin cycle. No tools needed and even the average moron could do it. Hope this helped.
