I have a Toshiba Satellite 5205-S503 Notebook computer. My computer was sluggish/ unresponsive and I shut it off by holding down the power switch and it turned off. The next day I tried turning it on and I get a sound from the DVD/CD Drive (1 sec) where it attempts to access it and that's all it will do; no display and it appears that it will not bootup. On the front of the computer, if you press the "MODE" switch to "CD" and press play and plug into the audio port, it will play music. This indicates that the CD/DVD player and the sound card are OK and maybe the mother board as well. I plugged an external monitor into the DB25 port and no display. I removed the battery and inserted one SODIMM at a time in slot one and reinstalled the battery in an attempt to eliminate bad RAM as a reason for no bootup; no change, will not boot. I removed the battery and then removed the hard drive and installed it in an external USB enclosure to test it. It was not recognized and did not spin-up properly; unreadable. So far it looks like I have a bad hard disk. I don't have a way to test the processor; however, I tested the fan and it is OK therefore I suspect that the processor is probably OK. If you read my entry (GoNASA)on your site in response to someone with a no-boot issue, you will see that this Toshiba model is unique and not in a good way (please read the entry.) My question for you is: would you say that a bad hard drive could explain the failure I have experienced? In addition,is it true that this model 5205-S503, part# PS520U-2SZRHV, will only boot if it detects a correctly functioning 40GB ATA Toshiba HD model# MK4018GAS?

You have gone through a long way.To check if the hard disk is the culprit. Just Boot the System using any Bootable CD like Linux live distribution CDs or Hiren's Boot CD.If everything work fine than replace the Hard drive or try to repair it.(work in many cases).

I recommend the second one because,it has got many tools for Hard Disk Repair (in case hard drive is the culprit) and moreover if you need to change the Hard Drive.you can always backup the data using the Said Disk.

Here is the download link

http://www.hirensbootcd.net/

Just Click the "Download Button".

and start downloading.

Extract the ISO image file and burn it in a CD and Boot the system using that CD.

Hope will it help you in pin pointing the problem.
Good LUCK.

My satellite 5205-s503 wont turn on, the power light just blinks

Try plugging it into a different outlet. If that doesn't work, test your ac adapter. Check the voltage for 19.5v.

How to do i enter bios setup in toshiba 5205-s705

Hold down the F1 key, then, while continuing to hold it down, press the power switch. the system will turn on, then prompt you to check system and press F2 (thats from memory, it maybe F1 again) to enter BIOS.
With many Toshibas you can hold down any key to do this, as it simply generates a keyboard error, prompting the same message.
Hope this info helps.

Forget password bios toshiba satlite 5205

To reset the BIOS read the information from this link.

In case of your Toshiba Satellite laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

Hi,
You will need the restore cds that came with your laptop. Insert the restore cd in your dvd drive and restart your computer. When the message "Press any key to boot from cd" press enter.
Then follow the on screen instructions to restore your computer.

Toshiba 5205-S503 Laptop- No power

- You may want to try to reseating all neccessary things on the system like optical drive, hdd, memory but before you do that disengage the power from the system like the ac and battery.

-If no..go try to remove the optical drive first and then turn the system on, then if the system boot without the optical drive shut it down and put back the optical drive and boot to bios and load the default setting and boot the system normally.
