TT Home does not recognise connection

Hi
i am very new to this. i just bought a 2nd hand TT1 v2 (skint) without manual. when i switched it on it just shows pick of TT asking me to insert card. card not supplied, will it work without one? when i plug the USB in to computer it just shows the connection on screen. Is this what it should do?
so far i have installed TT Home but nothing happens when i connect the TT with the USB. TT Home does not recognise the connection so nothing happens. I have tried different ports but still same. Can anyone help me please.

    Hi

Sorry taking so long to reply, laptop been out of action! I have tried another SD card and there was a different reaction. It looked as though it was going to load as the bar across the bottom filled but all that happened was the photo screensaver as with the original tomtom. Hope this means when i buy a new SD card it will work! I have seen some a lot cheaper on ebay. Do you think it is safe to buy one of these. They do have authorisation codes. My email address is [email protected]. Many thanks for your replies. They have been very helpful.

Lots of TT work without a card but some may not. Do a search on formatting the sd card for a TT tho cos this has been an issue for some users.

You definitely need software and maps on an SD card. The TOMTOM will not work without a card inserted. The card will contain MAPS , Map authorisation codes ( to show they are genuine TOMTOM maps bought and paid for ) , POI ( points of interest ), GPS fix data , voices ( for spoken navigation ) etc etc etc. ....................
PLEASE NOTE , TRYING A CARD FROM ANOTHER TOMTOM is very unlikely to work. Each card has an authorisation code that is generated via an algorithm inside each TOMTOM and is device specific.
However , trying a card from another tomtom might produce a diferrent result but still not work , at least this might prove that the tomtom is working OK before you rush out and buy a tomtom card.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD MAPS FROM TOMTOM but , you would also need all the other files that are on the SD card that was supplied with the tomtom when it was purchased. Your tomtom needs these files in order to work. If you are in UK and can let me have some contact details then I might be able to give you better advice ?

The computer does not recognise the Tom Tom

Try to reset the TT device, use a paperclip at the bottom of the unit. Start unit again, and try to reconnect.

Tomtom 1 (new edition) map of europe

I think you'll find that you can download it from tomtom home, with full technical help online & on the phone.

I dont advise COPYING it from a friend as you will get a symbol appear on the screen with a tomtom SD card with a large red cross through it, indicating that the tomtom knows its not a genuine copy.

TomTom One 2nd edition - Please help!

I experienced the exactly same problem/symptoms with the backup restore function today. After installing the new firmware application on my TomTom Go 510, I did a new backup of my TomTom using the Home Application,  I then attempted to "restore" that backup to two spare SD cards.  The dialog box indicated "restoring," but nothing was being restored. My work-around, which worked great, was to locate the Backup Storage folder on my hard drive, and Drag & Drop its contents onto the spare SD cards (after erasing them).
I'm running the TomTom Home application (v 1.5.106) on an Intel iMac, OSX 10.4.10.
