Can anyone help, with a solution. The external flash works quite well, but I did not spend 800 on a set up to have it mal-function...the internal flash does nothing, i can manually open the flash, however, it still will not fire
I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf
This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.
I can't get my flash to stay the freak Down!! In mid day full sun shine that ****** pops up!!! It's rather annoying...to be honest with you..
I removed my flash plate and flash shoe by following these instructions: http://www.conraderb.com/flashrepair/
They're for a 20D, but they work for the XTi as well. There's a little black button that sticks up on the right-hand side; mine must have been stuck down, which is the indicator that you have an external flash on. I cleaned it up, put the flash shoe and plate back on, and my built-in flash works again!
Just grab the top with your thumb and finger on the other side and pull it up. you may have to turn off the camera before shooting to celar any erro message.
dip a Q-tip in alcohol and clean the sliding parts of the flash. this might clearn away from gunk that made it stick.
if flash is out but doesn't fire, try it in all modes....

i have the same problem, flash does not pop out
Same problem w/ xti 1 yr old. Solution #1 had no effect
Same problem, This seems to be an issue with the xti. Flash works fine other than i have to manually get it to pop up by pulling it slightly then pressing the flash button. It appears to be a manufacturing issue as the flash seems like it may not be seated properly in its closed position pushing or angled slightly to the left when taking picture. Will eventually send the camera back to canon for repair. Spent to much money to have a broken product.
the internal flash pops up but will not fire
same thing. 1 year old.
