DVD writable media not recognized by drive... shows up as "Blank CD"

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2, and when I try to use DVD+R or DVD-R, the media is detected as "Blank CD". If I try to copy files into the drive window, it gives a generic message "Error Encountered".

I went into device manager and removed the drive, then re-discovered it, but still doing the same thing...

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Clark

I have the same problem. My drive shows my dvdr's as blank, ive checked it oin another computer and the dvd's working

I see the same with my IBM laptop and Matshita DCD+RW. No burner can see the blank DVD placed in the drive. It seems that most of the computers where working and in probably because of an M.S update something has been corrupted.

Please Help! it happens also with Vista business.

Using Windows XP. Want to copy vidoe from Media

Is the drive you are using a DVD writer or only a DVD reader? The drive that writes to RW disks is labeled DVD/RW or DVD Recordable.
These are the only drive types that will read and write a DVD/RW disc.

I download video from my flip video, but I cannot burn to DVD-RW...it says to insert CD which I have already done

What CD are you using to Burn then movie?

Get a Blank DV Rewriteable CD (make sure its blank)

Format the DVD CD by right clicking it from Windows Explorer and follow the instructions. (this should not be neccessary especially if its a blank CD)

Use a normal copy and paste from Windows Explorer to copy the movie file or folder into the DVD drive.

this process absolves the issue of media formats and portability. Also most CD DVD Burning Softwares are not compatible with some players.

Error code

Apparently the XP Pro CD you are using is pre-SP2, thus causing the error. With XP RTM and SP1, you need to supply the proper SATA drivers for the chipset on the motherboard since there is no built-in support for SATA drives. You can download the drivers from http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads/DownloadFile.aspx?catid=1&driverid=2214&areaid=2&LanID=0

During the XP setup you will need to press F6 to install these driver before attempting to copy the XP files to the drive. Or you could make a custom XP CD using the directions at http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html that has these SATA drivers already slipstreamed into the installation procedure.

Or if you know someone who has the WinXP Pro SP2 CD, you could borrow that for the install.

Sony VAIO model SZ330P notebook. How to create Startup CD

One easy way to make a startup CD: In your c:\ drive, find and copy the folder named "i386" to a blank CD. That folder is in c:\windows You might wish to use a CD-RW so that you can overwrite in case you make a mistake. You'll also need to find and copy these three files: regedit.exe, expand.exe, and winnt32.exe. These are also in the c:\windows folder. Keep in mind that if you have to use the disk someday, you'll need your XP product code, and you'll have to go into the BIOS and set the computer to boot from CD/DVD. Hope this helps.
