there should be a decal under the hood somewhere that shows the belt routing. if its gone you can probably go to the library and find a book of your car that will show the routing and you can either draw a picture or take a photo of it.
There's a routing diagram sticker under the hood. Look for it on the radiator support , the front shock tower or on the hood itself.
type this on google and see what you get...gmc k1500 serpentine belt routing diagram
I have a 1990 Olds 3.8 V6. Installed a 715k6 belt bypassing the frozen AC compressor using the stock belt routing. Working great.

you have to have a serpentine belt tool then find the belt tensioner and hook up the tool and release the belt tension and remove the belt and install new belt.the belt routing should be under the hood as correct routing is important and it will show you where the tensioner is
Go to the Google search engine, type in "1996 Oldsmobile Serpintine Belt routing Diagram", and the first row of stuff that pops up has the pictures for all the different engines of that year. Just pick the one that has the same number and location of pulleys as your motor. MAny parts manufacturers also have online help. For example, if you're installing a goodyear belt, visit their website, which is probably listed on the cardboard sleeve the new belt came in.
