Maytag side by side, bottom freezer compartment had daily ice build up

The bottom of the freezer compartment slowly fills with ice, then every 2 to 3 days, ice builds up and water leaks from the freezer onto the floor in a big puddle. I remove the ice frequently, it just builds up again. I can's figure out where the drain is supposed to be - there is no drain in the bottom of the freezer compartment. A repairmen came out and fixed it and it was better for several months and then it started all over again.

I’ve had my Maytag fridge for 8 years. But only this week did the same problem show up as cathy824 and lew223. When I poked a drink stirrer into the top of the drain hole, it was hard as a rock. Not knowing why condensate from the coils was not draining into the hole and tubing that would empty the water into the pan evaporator on the bottom of the fridge, I took everything apart in the back and messed around with the black rubber elbow at the other end of the drain plug. I shouldn’t have bothered, because what I finally did was to pour boiling, boiling hot water over the drain hole to melt the ice and gunk that was frozen solid in the drain tubing. While I was doing that, I poked the stirrer into the hole, washing the gunk down the drain and into the very dry evaporator pan. Keep pouring hot water into the drain hole until you’re satisfied that water can flow freely into the pan.

That solved the problem of condensate water freezing on the bottom of the freezer and running onto the kitchen floor. Thanks to lew223 for the fix! The fridge should be good for another 8 years now.

I had the same problem with mine a couple of months ago. There is a drain which gets plugged. You have to remove the contents of your freezer, and then look at the back area of the freezer. The panel that's on the back is removable. Once it's removed, you will see a drain at the bottom. Mine was clogged up with debris, and was covered with ice. I poured warm water over the drain, soaked it up...did this a few times to melt the ice, then I worked at cleaning out the drain. Mine wasn't plugged too badly, I ended up having to blow air through the drain using my air compressor, to be positive that it was clear of debris. You could poke something down the drain, but it won't go very far because there is an elbow on the drain tube(visible on the backside of the unit itself)

If you get it cleaned out, it should be fine. Mines been great ever since I cleaned mine out...no more puddles on the floor.

Maytag side by side freezer drain icing

This is a pretty common problem. Sometimes the defrost cycle is not long enough because the freezer setting were too low. But most times this begins slowly until the drain finally closes and then the water has no where to go but the inside of freezer or refrigerator. I have more help topics to prevent a constantly happening over and over again. But you may have a blockage down-line from the freezer. So until you can melt the ice and pour a warm solution of water and clorox in the drain and it end up in the pan below the refrigerator I will hold off on that until I hear back from you, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Ice building up in bottom of freezer of side by side MSD27 Maytag

Your defrost drain tube is clogged up. Remove the ice and look for the top of a drain tube about 3/8-1/2" in diameter. Once the ice is gone, use a meat baster (turkey baster) full off hot water stuck in the top of the drain tube and blast hot water through to clean it out. Do this several times with about 4 cups of hot water so you don't over flow the drain pan and flood the floor

Ice build up in bottom of freezer

Check the ice maker. sometimes they get cracked a will leak water into the freezer compartment. Also check the ice maker fill tube for leaks or someone could have spilled something. Although this is tipical of a clogged drain. What happens is when the fridge go into derfost, it will melt all the frost that is on the evaporator, turning it into water. The water drains down to a trough under the evaporator and down a drain hole in the trough ( this trough is behind the evaporator cover ) Removing the melted frost from the freezer. If that drain is clogged, the water cannot leave the freezer. Then when the fridge starts back up ,it will freez the water that was not drained. After repeated defrosting the water will fill this trough and run off into the bottom of the freezer to be frozzen when the fridge starts to cool again.

Water leaking from ice/water dispenser

hi there,

you may have a kink in the water line leading to the icemaker. the leak is due to warm water entering the icemaker itself. i would also check the water valve in the icemaker itself and ice actuators or paddles to any breakage.

Ice at the bottom of the freezer

bottom of rezzer compartment is supposed to be frozen( depending on timeof cycle) i wouldnt point to a defrost problem unitil the ice build up is hindering refigeration, its quite possible that thte defrost drain has just frozen itself over, and needs to be cleared to allow defrost water to go into the drip pan under unit

Drain plugged in freezer

First of all, is it ice or frost? If it is ice, I would say you have a leaky water valve to icemaker, running down evap. coils. Replace water valve. If you have frost-find out why it is not defrosting(defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer.

Bottom of Maytag Freezer Ices Up

You have a plugged defrost drain. easiest way to fix it is unload freezer compartment defrost all of the ice, then remove the 2 screws that hold the rear cover in place about half way down the back wall. once this is removed use hot water to flush out the aluminum evap pan at the bottom of the coil. once it is cleared i will usually pur a little bleach in to kill any algae build up.\

be sure to unplug the refrig and use caution not to cut your self on the evap coil as the fins are very sharp..
