If the door hits the floor and pauses for a couple seconds and then reverses to the open position it is traveling too far. Locate the 'down limit' adjustment on the side of the motor unit and turn this control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will probably be required.

Hi. My garage door opener is having a problem closing. It goes about 1/2 way down then reverses to the open position. Its a chamberlain 1/2 hp heavy duty. Any suggestions?

Hi swilson.... on the motor you will find adjustment screws. One to adjust the up setting and one the down. Also one for the pressure setting. Usually when the door is behaving as yours is the pressure setting needs to be tightened a bit so that it does not reverse direction with the tiniest bit of resistence. Make small adjustments so that you do not end up with a door that is a safety hazard in that it will not reverse when it hits an obstacle. Joe

The garage door goes all the way down but then goes right back up - it does not close

Had similar problem. Re-program travel and force limits. Make sure that travel limit (down) does not go too far (thus excessive force). Apparently this system has a force sensor that senses if there is something in the way of the door. This is different from the safety sensor "eyes". The problem in your setup is that you have programmed the door to travel down too much and he system looses its ability to use force sensor. Adjust travel limit (down) to a little less travel and you will be fine.

My garage door goes almost all the way down, then reverses back to the up position?

You can try increasing the 'down force' which is a control on the rear of the motor unit. If the main light is flashing 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another.

My Craftsman 1/2 Hp garage door opener doesn't stop going down despite (quite forcefully!) applying pressure in the opposite direction. It would buckle (and did) if I don't let it continue unhindered...do...

YOU NEED TO ADJUST THE DOWN FORCE.

YOU WANT TO TURN IT COUNTER CLOCKWISE TO THE STOP (THIS ADJUSTMENT IS ONLY ABOUT 3/4 TURN FROM MIN. TO MAX.). THEN TRY THE DOOR IF IT REVERSES TURN IT ABOUT 1/16TH TURN CLOCKWISE. CONTINUE THIS VERY MINOR INCRAMENT ADJUSTMENT UNTIL THE DOOR CLOSES WITHOUT REVERSING. THEN GO 1/16TH TURN FURTHER.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO STOP THE DOOR AND REVERSE IT BY GRABBING THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR AS IT GOES DOWN AND LIFTING SLIGHTLY. IF YOU CAN'T GET THE DOOR TO BOTH CLOSE AND REVERSE WITH MODERATE PRESSURE YOU MAY NEED ADJUSTMENT TO THE DOOR / SPRING / ETC.
- I DO NOT RECOMMEND ADJUSTING THE DOOR YOURSELF - CALL IN A PRO FOR THAT.

IF THE ADJUSTMENT IS SUCCESFUL ADJUST THE OPEN SENSITIVITY / FORCE IN THE SAME MANNER.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Door goes down then right back up again

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses you door sensors may have been bumped and are no longer pointing at one another.

If the door hits the floor and then reverses it is traveling too far. Locate the down limit control on the side of the motor unit and turn it in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will be necessary.

The door goes part way down then reverses itself and goes back up and stops

If when the door reverses the main light flashes 10 times you have a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering.

If the main light does not flash when the door reverses you can try increasing the 'down force'. This control is found on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go.

If that doesn't help you probably have a bad infrared sensor board. This is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

Is the belt or part of the opener hitting on the door as it trys to go down? Since if the door is down the opener goes all the way down, it seems that it might be hitting / binding on the door somewhere and then reverses.

Door goes part way down; goes up before getting a 1/4 way down

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a sensor problem. If the door starts down and then reverses but the main light does not flash it is most likely the RPM sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.
