Liftmaster door opener, motor hums but door does not move up or down!

  • truell Sep 08, 2012

I had the same problem. My garage door was in open position, when I press the button to close it, all I hear was hum noise for 2 seconds. What I found out the problem is the metal piece (Trolley) that door arm attach to was in contact with the stop screw on the rail. In Chamberlain manual that piece is called Trolley. Door Arm is attahced to Trolley and can be released from Trolley by pulling the rope. There is a big screw on the rail that stops trolley from going further towards the opener housing. You should leave some space between the screw and trolley. Once I made the adjust, it works. I have a photo but I cannot post it here.

Why doesn't the door move when i press the wall button it just hums?

Anthony, Since It's humming you know it's getting juice. It could be the the same exact problem I had on our Sears Liftmaster. First remove the cover and check the set of nylon gears to see if they try to move when you push the button. If so, the motor is probably ok.
The gears operate off a worm drive and come as a set, and sometimes they jam or are worn out. If the motor runs after pulling the gearset it's good. Go to Chamberlain for the parts. They're cheaper and faster than Sears. If want a diagram, for that model google one form their website and you can see how to take it apart. Ken

M otor hums but door does not open

If the motor is running and the chain or belt isn't moving, you have a broken gear in the opener.

The motor hums but doesn't move

pull the garage door latch freeing it from the motor, and try it that way, if it works then, its a bad(weak)motor.

Motor hums but door doesn't move. If I disconnect door and give chain a horizontal poke, it will move. When I reconnect door it returns to humming, without movement.

Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will find the drive gear has stripped. White sawdust all over. The part number for the gear kit is 41A2817 and it comes with instructions. It is available at any good door opener service company.

My Liftmaster GDO makes a clicking sound and won't open

See if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so remove the bolt and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control which is on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Remember to replace the bolt.

Liftmaster door opener, motor hums but chain and door does not move. Any ideas? Thanks

If the motor is running but the chain isn't moving you have a stripped drive gear. Remove the cover from the motor unit and check. It should be obvious.

Liftmaster 1265 - Motor hums but nothing else happens.

I have had same problem. Replacing the motor start capacitor fixed it. Capacitors can go bad in an instant when they get old, particularly if they are perturbed while servicing other parts.
