Carriage jam - Turn machine on, get carriage jam message, however the carriage can move freely if moved by hand. If I close and hit enter, carriage sounds like it's moving, then I get the error message again.

Sorry about the B.S., you can move the carriage by hand, and all you need is to clean the encoder strip that runs across behind the carriage assembly. You can wipe the strip gently with an alcohol swab or a Q-tip moist with alcohol. The bars on that strip tell the carriage where it is and grease or ink on it will give the carriage jam error. No calibration necessary after moving the head or cleaning the strip.

Did not solve the problem. Scanner head starts to travel to the right and stops in about 1" and makes a grind noise, ( from the motor I believe), and machine shuts down and dispaly flashes L-4. HELP!

Just wondering if you were able to fix this? I have the exact same problem with the L7590. The HP website says to move the carriage by hand to ensure there is nothing blocking the way. I've tried the alcohol, but it still stop about 1" from the left side when trying to move to the right. Any other suggestions?

The first problem is, you don't EVER move the carriage by hand! There is a timing belt that tells the printer where the print head is at all times and if you move the carriage by hand, you mess up the timing and you get the error about the carriage being jammed.

Bottom line is, you will have to take the printer to a repair facility to fix the problem with the jam message and re-time / calibrate the print head.

Hp 7520 carriage slams back & forth and then says it is jammed but can be moved freely

Hi
Going to resurrect this old thread as my experience may be of some use.
My HP 7520 kept coming up with error 0x610000f6.
You could hear the carriage moving and clunking as it hit the end stops.
Thought it was probably the encoder strip or sensor took the printer apart and cleaned / checked both looked ok. reassembled the printer still no joy.
As I had the sides off the printer I noticed that the ink catch / cleaning tray seemed to not want to move (mentioned in post above).

with the side off the printer it is easy to move the tray. After a bit of wiggling the printer booted up ok.
It still errors every now and then but again a bit of fiddling sorts it out until next time.
I should strip it down and find the problem but as the whole ink trak is filthy I cant be bothered.
Maybe if it gets worse I will if I do I will post some pictures.

Here is what you need to do to check the ink tray:

Open the lid as if you were going to change cartridges. Does the carnage move freely? If not then you probably have a different problem.

On the right hand side (opposite the screen) there are two torx screws you can now see under where the lid was.

Remove these.

Remove the ridged plastic band that runs around the bottom right hand side of the printer.Start at the front lever the top left hand corner out with a small screwdriver. Whilst holding this out slide the front section to the right. Once this has unclipped pull the whole ribbed piece of plastic forward. Now the ribbed plastic band should come away.

Remove the side panel that the two screws held in place.

Now you can see into the printer.

Close lid and turn on and look and see what happens. If the carriage moves from side to side and hits the end stop on the open side of the printer but the small white gear under the ink tray does not move then it is jammed as mine was.

Turn off printer. Open lid again. move carriage out of way.
Put some disposable gloves on. Where the carriage stops on the right had side it pushes a small lever. Push this with one hand with the other hand gently move the ink catch tray back and forth.

Once it is moving ok pus back to back position.

Close lid power on. Hopefully that will sort it out?

Spent ages looking on the internet for a solution this thread was the closest I found, amongst all the HP junk telling me I had a paper jam. Hope this is of use to someone.

Why doesn't my HP OfficeJet 7500A carriage move? It is jammed

Try to turn it off, open cover and move carriage a little bit by hand; don't push too hard. For some time it'll get back to life.

Clear carriage jam

Ok guys I was struggling with the same issue for HP 3520, so I opened the cartridge access door and press down on a small black piece of plastic (that holds the carriage in place) once you press it there will be a slight click sound and thenn move the carriage to the right hand side.
Now close the lead and click ok the clear message.

You should be ok.

This method worked for my model.
You must have the power turned on otherwise it won't move.

HP Pro 8500 printer has carriage jam. I have opened every door and there is no paper jam.

Sometimes the paper gets caught inside the printer all the way to the right (or left) of the print carriage. You will miss seeing it because the print carriage has moved the jamed paper to the right (or left) out of view. Carefully and manually move the print carriage to the opposite side and you might find small pieces of jammed paper there.

I keep getting a carriage jam.

hi first of all open the front cover of the printer and try to move the carriage mannualy by your hand while the printer is on now if the carriage is moving freely look if you see any obstacle or any broken part in the carriage rod .... clean the carriage rod with a soft cloth and then remove the in cartridges and close the front cover now while the printer is power on press and hold # and * it will ask for the special key combo press 1 then 2 then 3 and now it will show you support menu use right arrow key and go to reset menu and press ok then go to semiful nvm reset and press ok wait for a min and then turn on the printer
wait for the printer to initialize now power on the printer and then wait for the message to insert the ink cartridge insert the ink and see if this works
if you still face the same error then it means its not a firmware error its a hardware malfunction problem and the device needs service
you can also follow this document on the hp website and see if it works

My printer made a weird noise and now says "Open door Clear carriage jam and then press Enter". How do I clear a carriage jam? I have opened the top cover and usually the print cartridges move to the...

Issue The error ' Open Door, Clear Carriage Jam, and then Press Enter ' displays on the product. The following symptoms might also accompany this error:
* The product will not print. * Printing stops unexpectedly. * The carriage does not move.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting. Solution one: Turn the All-in-One off and on again
1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product. 2. Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on again.
* If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting. * If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Clear any paper jam A carriage jam might follow a paper jam. Follow these steps to check for and remove any jammed paper. Step one: Check for and remove any loose paper from the input tray Remove any loose paper from the input tray, the output tray, and the automatic document feeder (ADF). CAUTION: Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Step two: Clear a paper jam from the rear access door WARNING: Always clear paper jams through the back door if possible. To avoid tearing the paper and damaging the print mechanism, pull paper from the printer slowly and gently. Avoid touching the internal components of the printer.
1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer. 2. Remove the back door and remove as much jammed paper as possible.
3.Replace the back door and open the carriage access door. If there is paper visible that cannot be removed through the back door, gently pull it out from the front.
4. Reconnect the power cord and close the printer.
* If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting. * If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Make sure that the carriage moves freely
1. With the product turned on, open the cartridge access door. The carriage might try to move into the access area. If so, allow it to move to that position. 2. Without turning off the product, unplug the power cord from the back of the product. WARNING: You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock. 3. Look in through either the cartridge access door or the output paper tray to make sure that the cartridges are secure in the carriage and not loose. Also, make sure that there are no obstructions under or around the carriage to block it from moving. 4. Make sure the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right. Clear any obstructions found. You might have to reach through the output paper tray to access the carriage. 5. Close the cartridge access door and reconnect the power cord to the product. 6. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
* If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting. * If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Remove and reinsert the print cartridges Incorrect installation of the print cartridges can cause the product to show a false carriage jam. Follow these steps to remove, and then reinstall the print cartridges. Step one: Remove the print cartridges
1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product. 2. Open the front of the product to access the carriage. The carriage moves to the center of the product.
3. Unlatch the two print cartridge latches, and then raise the latches. 4. Remove the print cartridges.
Step two: Reinsert the print cartridges
1. One at a time, hold a print cartridge with the printed label up, and then slide the print cartridge into its slot. Repeat this step for the other print cartridge.
# NOTE: Insert the black print cartridge into the slot with the gray latch, and insert the color cartridge into the slot with the blue latch. # Grasp the end of the latch on the cartridge slot with your thumb, and then pull the end of the latch toward you. While holding the latch, press down on the top of the latch until it stops, and then release the end of the latch so that it catches under the tabs. CAUTION: To avoid damaging the product, do not force the latches into place.

3. Close the product cover. A message displays on the control panel to align the print cartridges. 4. Press the Enter button to begin the cartridge alignment. Two pages print. Follow the instructions printed on the second page to complete the alignment. 5. Try the print job again.
* If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting. * If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

How to Clear carriage jam on HP PSC 1610 Printer? No obvious paper jam visible.

Dear it's the carriage jam error. so it mean that your carriage is jam not paper. so open the printer where you insert the cartridge. check whether it is jam or what . cartridge carrier is jam kindly turn off the printer and try to move the cartridge head by hand very gently and if seems to be stuck than check for anything which abort him to move freely so than might be anything like dust or else. when you get success in moving the head put some machine lubricant on the rod on which head moves and check it ok.

Carriage Jam

Make sure you can move the print cartridge holder freely and that it isn't being blocked by anything inside the printer, also check if the cleaning station is in the right position, maybe it is locking the cartridges.
