The easiest way to update your console software is to connect to Xbox LIVE. To update your console by using Xbox LIVE, all you need is an Internet connection.

1. Connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet.
   
2. On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
3. Select Network Settings.
4. Select Wired Network or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
5. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
6. Select Yes if you are prompted to update the console software.

open the symantec antivirus
at the bottom you can fiind an option as run live update
click on that to run the live update
or go to the following site

from there download intelligent updater and run it in your computr
by doing this you can run the live updates

Download the update from http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages/xbox-360/how-to/update-xbox-360/system-updates.aspx#copy on your PC unzip it to a usb memory stick and install it to the x-box from there.

You could maybe chalk it up to bad connection or maybe the box is banned. You could try downloading the update from Microsoft's website and update that way.

you probably need to update the game. Xbox will sign you out until you receive the update to that game. once it has been updated you should be able to play the game online.

what happened when you tried to download the update?

Xbox Live is having problems guys they are working on it and hope to have it fixed sometime this week the problem you guys are having is due to the xbox live being down. Although it isnt completely down they are having gameing issues as well as download issues and voicemail issues.
