Download tuneup 2007
run system optimiser and in it you will find a setting to run from memory. do that and see how your pc runs. When the computer has everything in memory then things are twice as fast. Also it would be best if you formatted the computer and didnot install office on it. It brings the computer to half the speed. I am sure your same pc will work for years

I would install Microsoft Security Essentials and run a scan after downloading all the updates. If you are running Windows XP, you can also run Combofix before installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you have Norton, Mcafee, or any other antivirus software, ad scanners, etc., it would be a good idea to uninstall them before installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you don't use System Restore, it is a good idea to disable it by right clicking My Computer, click properties. On the System Restore tab, check the Turn off system restore option, and click Ok.

If this doesn't speed things up tremendously, try installing more RAM, or replacing your RAM with larger sized sticks.

Combofix and Microsoft Security Essentials can be found using Google.

A good, free firewall replacement that uses very little resources is Comodo Firewall. This can also be found using Google.

Yes, your hard drive is going bad but before concluding that your hdd is already bad do this first download hard disk sentinel and install it on your pc.

after you have downloaded and install the program run a series of test on it. then if you find that the hard drive is already faulty then its about time to replace it
