Question about Intervideo WinDVD 5 for PC

1 Answer

Intervideo WinDVD5 I recently bought a brand new Thinkpad (12/6/2007). I have been trying to resolve the DVD problem through IBM's partner locally with no luck and I really can't have my laptop shipped to IBM for repairs at this time. . .my problem since 12/2007 is I keep getting audio but a black screen with a green box in the upper left corner of the screen when I try to play a DVD. I thought it was the subtitles that caused it. . . I am hearing-impaired, so I took the subtitles off and same problem. I am using a Thinkpad R61i Windows XP, IE7. I have also searched the Intervideo/Corel website to no avail. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

THANKS so much kecik! The problem is occurring with some DVDs. I will check the settings on winDVD and see it fixes the problem. If it is still happening, I will download VLC player and try that one out. Again, thanks so much for your response.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T400 with WinDVD 5 installed on it. Every DVD I try gives me the same result - audio but a blank screen. I've searched the WWW and WinDVD 5 is practically obsolete now. I cannot upgrade nor can I install a different application / utility (this problem affects 1500 laptop users), does anyone know if there are codecs available for WinDVD 5?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

The color is degraded - in cases turning the resulting DVD as almost black and white and the yellow in subtitles is way off to a side of the subtitling

Did you try with some types of DVDs? If with all are the same result, it might be the setting or there is real a problem with the player software.
I m not so familiar with winDVD.
Try to download and use this VLC player:

Hi, This may sound silly but check that there are NO blemishes( read fingerprints) on the disc surface as just about every player I know of will take execption to these - clean disc again just to be sure.
While you say the staff member has checked the unit, they dont always give them a "soak test" and often these types of fault go unnoticed. verify with another known disc to be sure and if the problems still exists, then you may have a temperamental or aged unit.
Please note - there are many pieces of s**t out there so best buy a new unit of a reputable brand when it comes to this kind of technology.

Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad T23 2648-DVD ROM not working. Bought on eBay. Either no driver or no software? DVD ROM . Can it be fixed, &/or can I raise a dispute with eBay/PayPal? Lenovo does not have support...

Try ejecting it and putting it into the other multibay to see if it works. What sort of symptoms is it exhibiting? It is probably dead as this is an old system and parts wear out over time, especially dvd-rom drives. These are pretty cheap and can be replaced easily. Make sure you save the dvd rom frame and ide connector from the drive as you will need this to apply to another drive.

I would return the drive if you bought it on ebay for a functioning one. Most reputable sellers will test items before shipment and refuse shipment if it fails testing. Other fail safes are having a period of time to test the item and return it if defective.

While I was not able to find that specific model of laptop, I was able to locate the CDRW Bay and based on my research this bay only supports the following models. Though it may look the same and even have the same interface, if it is not in the supported model list, it will not properly function.

Supported Media Types:

Compatible with:
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad R50

  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad X41 series (X series media slice or Ultrabase required)

My IBM 600 thinkpad will not boot up How can I fix it? when I turn it on nothing at all hapens.

Try swapping / reseatting the memory

Booting without the battery / hard drive / and dvd drive.

If that doesn't work, there isn't much you can do besides having a local tech look at the machine.

They'll probably say, bad motherboard. In which case it's time for a new laptop!

IBM thinkpad x31 w/ultrabay 2000 blu-ray drive question

If the bay is a DVD drive Blue Ray will work as long as you have a newer DVD decoding software. There are some decoders or codecs at IBM's support site, such as WinVid. If the codecs at IBM do not work with Blue Ray, then try download.com and search for DVD playing software.

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
