Hi, to me it sounds like it could be one of two things the first thing i would do is take the control apart and check for water damage spilt drinks or babys dribble can cause buttons to act as if they were stuck.
So remove the case and clean the pads behind the buttons and clean the contacts on the circuit board with dry cloth, then put it back together and give it a try.
you may find doing that will solve your problem.
If not then the chances are the remote has a fault with it causing it to not operate your telly you know the remote is giving off a signal as its showing up on the telly so it may have been dropped causing a fault with the remote.
what you could try if this is the case is go out and buy one of those all in one remotes these can be brought from next to nothing and buying one of these would tell you if the telly is at fault or the remote as if the new remote works the telly then you know the problem is with the old remote if it dont work then their is a fault with the firmware on the telly if this is the case then it would need taking in a getting repaired as this isnt something you can do yourself..
